Topic Subject: EE resets my computer...
posted 11-27-01 06:01 AM CT (US)
EE will install & load fine, however after playing it for a little while (~5mins) it will reset my computer. The first time it did this (unpatched) one of my chips of ram stopped working (whether it was due to the game or not i am unsure). Then i could no longer access windows for more than 3 mins or so (probably due to the ram). After removing the "bad" ram and reformatting i reinstalled EE and played for a little, and then it reset my computer again. Is this a known problem, or is there any workaround for this? Everything else runs without a problem.

this is 1.4 athlon 256 [used to have 512 ] geforce3 running win2k SP2.
gigabyte mobos with newish (via 4in1) drivers

works fine on my other athlon (identical hardware)

help..... must play.......... for more than......... 5 minutes...

I think your processor could be over-heating.

Take the case off and put another fan on it, and try again.

Does the mouse lock up as well? Do you have any hardware conflicts?

I don't think so.

This is a problem we had on Win 2K systems in testing. What version of DirectX are you using? Make sure you have DirectX 8 (preferably 8.1) or later installed.

Bleh!

I *still* think it's an over-heating problem. Lock ups that eat the mouse as well are usually caused by over-heating processors.

the likly reason i thought was overheating.... however my case is always off and the chip was running ~60degrees.
(mobo was ~ 35-40)

i think EE came with a direct x install? if it did i installed that, otherwise i installed directx8 from tribes2 cd, and then later another directx8 (which was the same or less)

i hear athlons can run up to ~70 degrees though?

edit : just found it, direct x 8.0 (4.08.00.0400)

ill try 8.1 when i get home, thanks, much better than sierras help, who say they will get back to me in 48 hours, this was last week

The EXACT same thing happens to my computer. And I have Directx 8.1 on it.

Specs:
Pentium III 733/133
640 MB RAM
Asus GeForce2 - 22.80 drivers (although resets still happen on 21.81 and 21.83)

Any suggestions since I can't upgrade directx any further?

Oh, I'm running WinXP

uh, btw it doesnt freeze (and remove the mouse pointer) it literally resets.
ie press your reset button, thats what it does.

so im not too sure if it is heat, however tribes2 seems to hang quite often too (need to switch the power off)

im gonna try 8.1 in a little...

Ya, no freezing, no nothing. Just complete up and random resetting... just goes and does it.

is it within like the first 10 mins?

ohh well, there goes my idea of upgrading to xp and fixing all my problems

btw havent found a dx 8.1, but ill get back to you when i find it.

anymore suggestions?

Ya, it WAS in the first 5 minutes. No real pattern to it... couldn't predict it. But always within 10 minutes.

I fixed it.

Had to go WAY back to 6.13 detonators, but it works now. No resetting. It's the new drivers I guess. Try that and see.

uh 6.13 again? :/
ahh well, if it will get it working, im up for it.

btw do you have a link for dx 8.1? (or know any recent games which will have it on?) <- im sure i saw 8.1a on one of them, but im not sure which

also do you have a link for the 6.13 detonators?
theyre not even on nvidias www :/

update : ok i found the 6.13, installed etc, tried the game, but no luck, still resets

sierra finally emails me back, with their "solution", are you logged in using administrator

if anyone can read/understand win2k dumps (or .dmp files) i can post them...

Can I ask which version you used? I went back to 6.1 last night and my system still locks and resets.

I don't think the problem is heat related as earlier posted. I run 3D Studio Max on the same machine and during heavy workloads the processor goes to 100% for hours and the machine doesn't overheat then.
