Generally breaking this rule will result in an instant permanent ban. Sorry,
First thing I should tell you is that I never play this level in the orientation it starts in. I flip it 180° so that the player position is in the southeast corner. It is because it makes it easier to place my quarries. Everything I am saying is based on the orientation I use. Just hit "X" twice, and you will be in the orientation I use.
• Turn the game speed down to 20, so you can get set up more quickly. The yellow and blue Salidins will attack quite early in the game, so you will need all the speed advantage you can get.
• Liberal use of the pause key will come in handy throughout this level. It will allow you to scrool around the level without wasting time.
• Do not bother setting up any farms in the central green space. You can not protect them, and they will just be destroyed. Don't waste your time.
• You will want to avoid placing any buildings against the plateau way separating you and the orange Saladin to you north (Remember that you are using my orientation.). the reason for this will be explained later.
When the level starts, place your grannery (x2) and your market place. Then expand your stockpile.
Place 5 or 6 woodcutter huts around in the trees.
When your stone starts appearing on your stockpile, block up all three passages out of the circular bit of canyon you are in with low walls. One layer will do for the moment, but you will definately want to thicken them later.
Place a barracks near you campfire, and 2 armoury buildings.
Place 5 or 6 hovels in the northwest, packed together, and against the wall. You will need a lot of workers in a minute.
Buy 15 leather armour, and 15 crossbows, then hire 15 crossbowmen.
Buy 300 wood.
Place four quarries carefully, two to the south, and two to the east. Make sure you leave room to add more later, especially once the trees have been cut down. Place 2 ox tethers near each quarry, as close to the stockpile palettes as possible.
Place a mill beside the stockpile, preferably touching it, then place three bakeries. Be prepared to increase the number of bakeries as you are able, eventually reaching 12 or more as some point in the near future. The bakeries should be placed in blocks of 2 x (3, 4, or 5) to conserve space, yet allowing access. Since you do not have farms, you will have to remember to buy wheat from time to time.
Place 5 iron mines on the iron deposit, as close to the plateau wall as possible. Over time, you will want to steadily add more, because iron will be an important provider of money for you. Be careful not to block off any of the mines, or they will become useless.
Start placing some fletcher huts close to both the stockpile (where the fletchers will be getting wood) and the armoury (where they will be delivering the weapons to). Set them to making crossbows, since you will need crossbowmen for their stopping power against the horse archers and swordsmen the yellow and Blue Saladins will be sending against you. Over time, you will want to increase the number of fletchers to somewhere between 8 and 12. Do not set up any other weapon making shops. Buy leather armour as you need it.
As stone starts coming in, thicken those walls blocking off the passages out of your area if you haven't done it already.
Where the southernmost passage leads into the area to your west, place two square towers and a gatehouse. You will add balistae on top of these towers, and man them with engineers. You will also send those first 15 crossbowmen you hired there. This is where the blue Saladin will attack you very very soon. You have two towers now, but you will want to increase that number to three as soon as you can.
In the passage leading to the northwest, you will want to place a square tower with a few layers of wall in front of it and a manned balista. This is where the yellow Saladin will attack first, using horse archers and a catapult. As your fletchers start delivering crossbows, hire crossbowmen and send them here. You will want at least ten when the first attack comes. Also, you will want to add another square tower (avec balista) when you are able to. Don't bother erecting a gatehouse here. Use stairs.
About now, the orange Saladin will have built the towers on to his castle, and may even have started showering you with rocks from one of the mangonels. Here comes the reason why I told you not to place buildings next to that plateau wall sepearting you from the orange Saladin. What you need to do is set up six trebuchets next to the plateau wall. In this position, they can hit most of the orange Saladin's castle, but can not be hit by arrows. Use the trebs to take out the most dangerous towers first (like the ones spraying rocks at you), then start doing damage to various vital areas around the castle.
If you have not been attacked yet, hire some slaves, and send them to dig a moat around the three towers to the west. this is because the blue Saladin will try to send assasins here, and assasins don't swim.
You should be under attack by the blue and yellow Saladins by now. Do not count on your defences holding. Build an inverted L shaped (roughly) double or triple thick low wall a short distance within your canyon area witha set of stairs on the inside. Add a gatehouse or two if you can to send reinforcements out to your outer defences. If you can not, start manning this wall with crossbowmen as quickly as they become available, and concentrate them near the middles of the north and west sides. As soon as the first attack is repulsed (assuming you did not die), repair any damage to the outer defenses, and reinforce or reman then as needed. Leave the crossbowmen on the low wall for now.
If you have not done so already, set up some inns and some breweries. Buy hops as needed. When the ale coverage bonus reaches +8, increase your taxes to -6 penalty.
Add a cathedral, a church, and six chappels as you are able to. This should get you up to a +5 religeon bonus or more in a short amount of time. This is not for taxes. I'll explain shortly.
Once you have about 30 crossbowmen on the three towers to the west, with the three manned balistae, and with the moat dug, attacks from the blue Saladin should cease to be a problem. When the two towers in the nortwest passage are maned with at least 20 crossbowmen, and two balistae, attacks from the yellow Saladin should cease to be a problem. Now you can get to the business of taking out the orange Saladin
Just south of the outer defence wall, place a gatehouse, then move the crossbowmen you have on the inner defence wall on to the gatehouse. Do not do this until you have at least 20 crossbowmen. These guys will then proceed to duke it out with any of the orange Saladin's archers within range. Keep reinforcing this group, and keep destrying towers and important buildings with the trebuchets. (Note: The gatehouse may be shut if there are any enemy troops nearby, so you may have to open it manually to let your crossbowmen in.)
As you get the stone, start adding square towers to the north of the gatehouse, and move the crossbowmen there. You should eventually be able to get four of them. Outfit these towers with mangonels, and tell them to aim for orange Saladin's keep. The combination of mangonel fire, trebuchet fire, and crossbow fire will rapidly make life extremely miserable for orange Saladin, and reduce his troops to almost none.
Recruit monks. When you get 50+, build a gatehouseon the north side of the towers, to give the monks a passage way through (You don't want them to try and walk all the way around, do you?). Move the monks to just south of the towers. Once they are there, order the mangonels to stop firing, then make sure the gatehouses are open, and send the monks in for the kill.
You will now have two areas with lots of resources to exploit, that will enable you to kill the blue and yellow Saladins.
In the open area to the west, set up some quarries and ox tethers. Do not place any iron mines here however, or the blue Saladin will start firing at them from his easternmost towers.
The area to the north, formerly occupied by the orange Saladin can be more or less freely exploited.
Now come the reason for all the religion. You are going to start errecting gallows after gallows (They take up very little space and cost 50 gold) until your fear factor hits the maximum of -5. This in turn will make the workers produce 50% more of whatever they are making, giving you more money from selling stone, iron, and bread, and getting lots of crossbows for you in a hurry.
Start hiring crossbowmen, and send them to wait just outside the towers to the west. You will eventually mass 60+. While they are massing, they will also help fend off any attacks to the area. When you have at least 60, move this group in stages up to the central green space area. As they proceed, they will have a number of encounters with troops from the yellow Saladin, but they will eventually reach the centre, cutting the Saladins off from there farms, and preventing then from launching any attacks against you.
Start massing more crossbowmen in the same place you did before. Again, 60 or more will be wanted. (Don't forget to keep sending reinforcement to both groups of crossbowmen as often as possible.)
Send a sacrificial grunt westward until blue Saladin's easternmost towers start shooting at him. Set up 8 - 12 trebuchets immediately to the east of this position. (This will keep them just out of range of fire from the towers, but will keep the towers withing the firing range of the trebs.) Knock out the towers with the trebs. You should also be able to hit the mercenary post which is close to the towers. Tell the engineers to exit the trebs, and tell them to build a new set of trebs inside the passage immediately to the east of blue Saladin's castle. Send your massed crossbowmen to the same place. Use the new trebs to take out all the towers and gatehouses, starting with the most dangerous ones first. Since some of the engineers are likely to have been killed while traveling to the site, you will want to send more to man any unmaned trebs, or to build additional trebs.
The passage your crossbowmen and trebs are in will be blocked by a moat and a group of statues. Send three or four monks over to destroy the statues, then move your crossbowmen in closer to the castle to allow them to clear out blue Saladin's troops. When the troops are all cleared out, send over some monks to finish blue Saladin off.
Now send all the troops from the ruins of blue Saladin's castle into the central green space to join with the other group of crossbowmen. If you have continued to send a steady steam of reinforcements to both groups, as I said to do earlier, you should have a positively massive group of 200+ crossbowmen in the central green area. You should also have all of the engineers from the trebs waiting there too, hopefully with some fresh new engineers.
Start moving the crossbowmen north towards the yellow Saladin's castle in the following manner: Select half the group and move it to an area in front of the other half. the half that is not moving will be able to shoot at any troops that come out to meet the group that is moving. When the moving group comes to a stop, select the other half and move them to the front. The two groups will basically leap frog each other with one half providing covering fire for the other half as it moves.
Meanwhile, instruct the engineers to construct trebs in the diagonal passages. Like before, this will allow the trebs to shoot while the plateau walls keep them from being hit by archers.
Taking down the yellow Saladin is pretty much a turkey shoot now. The overwhelming numbers of crossbowmen will rapidly anihilate any troops in the castle, while the trebs destroy the towers and important building. Then you just have to send in your monks to bring the level to an end.
Tada!
