Current Stage: Stage Three Maps in for Judging

Contest Rules*
This contest will take place in three stages: landscape design, castle design, and story/scenario scripting. Each stage will have two weeks for entries to be submitted, followed by a week for judging. The winner for each round will be announced at the start of the next stage.

The winning map from each stage will continue on to the next stage to be built upon. For example, the winning landscape map will be used for everyone in Stage Two to build their castle upon.

General Guidelines:

  • This is a single player competition.

Stage 1 - Landscape Design (Runs January 25th to February 8th)

The challenge: To create a suitable site for a castle in a fertile river valley.

Guidelines:

  • Maps should be Invasion type and 400x400
  • All map editor tools under landscape may be used, except for signposts. Do not place signposts.
  • Buildings, ruins and troops may not be placed.
  • Maps will be judged in the following categories:
    -Fulfils the Challenge /10
    -Originality /10
    -Aesthetics /15
    Total: /35
  • Maps must be submitted by February 8th (forum time) to GillB.

Judging will take place February 9th to the 14th, with the winner announced on February 15th, at the start of Stage Two.

Stage 2 - Castle Design (Runs February 15th to March 1st)

The challenge: To build the best castle (out of wood or stone).

Guidelines:

  • Contestant may not change the landscape in any way, except for dead tree replacement (or removal to make room for the castle) and replacing parts of rivers with bridges.
  • Only tools from the buildings section of the editor may be used (i.e. no landscaping)
  • Do not place troops.
  • Do not place signposts.
  • Maps will be judged in the following categories:
    -Originality /10
    -Aesthetic Quality /15
    -Practicality /10
    Total: 35
  • Maps must be submitted by March 1st (forum time) to GillB.

Judging will take place March 2nd to the 7th, with the winner announced on March 8th, at the start of Stage Three.

Stage 3 - Story/Scenario Scripting (Runs March 8th to the April 12th)

The challenge: In this stage the contestants must provide the following for the map: name, story, instructions for play, and scripting.

Guidelines:

  • The map type can be changed to fit the story/win requirements.
  • The map should be reasonably challenging.
  • Story should be both original and entertaining. The map entry should include both the story and instructions in separate .txt files. The instructions can be in the form of a help file or a readme file, with as much information as you think is necessary or desirable. The in-game story area should include an aspect of the story or instructions, or a combination of both.
  • Length is not important for the story - it's the content that counts.
  • The following (and only the following) changes may be made to the map itself:
    **signposts may be placed
**dead trees (if there are any at this stage) can be replaced
**troops may be added to fit your scenario
**animals may be placed if they fit the story/scenario
  • Maps will be judged in the following categories:
    -Playability /10
    -Balance /10
-Usefulness and integration of scenario instructions: /5
    -Story /10
    Total: 35
  • Maps must be submitted by April 12th (forum time) to GillB.

Judging will take place March 23rd to the 28th, with the final winner announced on March 29th.

*With thanks to Thorium for the contest idea, and Zebas for writing the first draft of the rules!

I'll enter this. A few questions, though:

To enter in, say, stage two, you have to of entered stage one right?

And if you enter stage 2, do you have to enter stage 3, or can that be left to someone else?

Yes, to enter Stage 2, you have to have entered Stage 1. But you can decide not to continue with 3 if you don't want to.

single player comp, does this mean Arthus and I have to submit a landscape map each if we want to enter, or can we still work as a team?

Separately, WarLord_Designs. Maybe use your old names, or at least identify which one is which. Any thoughts on this, Jayhawk?

Thats true, I thought I had put away my terrain gloves for good, it would seem not.

Thanks for the reply.

What would be an example of a river valley?
You better dust those gloves well and check if they still fit.

OK sounds straight forward but does the river actually need to be river, i mean can it be marsh or ocean water?
Arthus
posted 01-25-05 23:31 EST (US)     12 / 129
Yes, I think that can be flexible...

Edit: Only flexible to a certain extent. Still have to have a river valley, though you can also work in ocean or marsh if it somehow fits. Here's a chance to strive for originality, to distinguish your map!

I'm supposing no crusader map then?

In peace sons bury their fathers, in war fathers bury their sons.

Here's the latest (after consultation)...

No, sorry, flexibility only goes so far. Marsh and ocean are ok... but there still has to be a river valley for the castle.

Just Stronghold, not Crusader, as not everyone has Crusader and wouldn't be able to progress to later stages of the contest.

Does this mean the castle has to be on the lowered area, not on a cliff. like a motte.

I understand a valley to be a long narrow area between hills. would it be ok to have a cliff in the middle of the valley on which a castle might be placed? or must the valley be flay without major hills on which castles might be placed?

So long as it has a valley and a river and room for a castle, I'm happy. The rest are ways that you can make your map stand out, so it's up to you.

What is happening with the stone and iron?
Do we place it on the map now or in the later stages

Stone and iron count as landscaping so it can go on now.

Just a small question about bridges.

If you don't want a ford in your river, can the castle guy delete some water in order to put a bridge their? Or should the landscape guy put a line of land across the river, leaving a choice of bridge to the castle person?

Or should I just use fords?

Good question - let's say the landscape person can make fords, and the castle person can make bridges, deleting the necessary water.

I'll change that in the rules for Stage 2.

when the castle stage begins, will we be able to make higher walls by adding height to a lower area to make the wall higher?

If we cant I can see a lot of basic castles being designed.

Just a thought.

No, sorry, altering the terrain height would be changing the landscape too much. The idea is to work within the confines of the winning landscape map from round one.

Basically the second stage will be a bit like you being the actual knight who builds his castle using the landscape that Gaia provided him with.
The challenge will be to work with what you got.
