Minimap:

The Kraken by Lord Alfred Tennyson

Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides: above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant fins the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battering upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by men and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

The first reports of Kraken were from Norway in the 12th century. These legendary sea monsters were said to be capable of capsizing a ship and dragging a man-of-war to the bottom. Kraken are now thought to have been giant squids (Architeuthis dux), or even colossal squids (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). Giant squids frequently reach 60 feet, while colossal squids are considerably larger (though it should be noted that none of the 6 specimens caught so far have been full grown). The giant squids have also been known to attack ships, lending credence to the legends.

So, with that background, our story...

Captain Kerr and his crew set sail from Stavanger, Norway. Two days out to sea, a great storm arose, the waves parted, and a horrific sea monster appeared! With great tentacled arms reaching to the top of the main mast, the creature crushed the hull and capsized the ship. Most of the crew members perished, either eaten by the monster or drowned. Captain Kerr and a lucky handful escaped the creature and rode out the storm on planks from the ship. The next morning dawned bright and clear, and the bedraggled group soon washed up on the shore of an unknown land with an abundance of game, but limited resources. Can they survive long enough to make a ship to sail home, or will they build a new home here?

(Note: In making this map I mostly wanted to have fun creating the kraken and ship, but I also tried to make it playable. Sorry, but I couldn't work in any iron without destroying the picture!)

For me this freebuild is an example, how attractive a minimap can be. And how Stronghold still inspires to creativity and ingenuity.
Playable and replayable. There are several places for the keep, but it is not easy, especially not, when you want to place stone walls. Not much room for stone quarries, but enough. Trade was flourishing. Creativity: This map is very special, an excellent working out of the story.
The landscape on the map has of course its restrictions, the Kraken is the main point, but how clever everything is put in place.
Excellent story.
Thank you, Kester.
