Description:

In 66 AD, the Judean Provisional Government rebelled against Roman rule and appointed Josephus governor of Galilee. After Josephus' arrival there, John of Gischala, a leader in the rival rebel faction known as the Zealots, invited Josephus to the Galilean city of Tiberias. While making a speech there, John's soldiers went to attack Josephus, but he escaped into a boat and sailed to his base in Tarichea. After his escape, Josephus smoothed over relations with Tiberias by promising to build defensive walls for it, which the Romans had forbidden.

This however did not settle matters with the city of Tiberias nor with John. When Roman cavalry were sighted outside the city, people in Tiberias shouted praise for the pro-Roman ruler Herod Agrippa II. So Josephus carefully sailed a navy just within view of the city so that the citizens saw the boats but didn't get a good enough view to realize that there was no great army inside.

Further, although John of Gischala was not at war with Josephus, he sent messengers to Jerusalem to complain about Josephus. But Josephus posted guards who caught John's messengers.

Scenario Features:

- A precise mapping of eastern Galilee
- Decorative eye candy using hidden units
- A Diplomacy trigger thanks to Chab's RockNROR tool

Installation:

Extract the Scenario file called "Josephus Takes Command of East Galilee.scx" into your "Scenario" Folder that is in your "Age of Empires" game folder. The Scenario folder is where your other .SCX files are kept.

You don't have to do anything with the BMP files in the Zip file. They are just informational illustrations to give you a better idea of the gameplay map.

This scenario was intended to be played using the ROCKNROR Mod, and the Mod is necessary to make the triggers work. You can get ROCKNROR here:
http://aoe.heavengames.com/dl-php/showfile.php?fileid=2464

However, the Scenario is still playable without ROCKNROR.

Gameplay Notes:

I was able to beat it on Hardest and recommend playing it on that difficulty.

I made the game with ROCKNROR, but it also works on regular ROR. I designed the scenario so that if you are playing using ROCKNROR, after a minute of gameplay, John of Gischala (Brown) declares peace with you. If you save the game in the first minute, it may nullify the Peace Trigger. After he declares peace, you should be able to save without any problems.

Even if for some reason the Peace trigger doesn't work (eg. if you are playing without ROCKNROR) and you practically have to defend yourself from John's forces, you can still win the game anyway by meeting your objectives. So this potential Diplomacy glitch is not a major problem.

Be careful that you do not research "Fortifications" in the Gaia Granary on the west side of Tarichea, because you need to build Medium Walls to meet your wall-building objective.

See the Readme for a Solution guide. Please let me know in the Comments section if you get any glitches or if the objectives are too confusing.

The scenario is part of a Series that I made about early Christianity that can be found in the Heaven Games Granary:

1. Gethsemane (30-33 AD)
2. Conversions and Catacombs of Rome (41-62 AD)
3. Thomas' Mission to Indo-Parthia (46-51 AD)
4. Abgar V's Mesopotamian Campaign (49 AD)
5. Nero's Persecution (64-67 AD)
6. Josephus Takes Command of Eastern Galilee (66 AD)
7. Josephus Retakes Tiberias (66 AD)
8. Nero's Killing (68 AD)
9. Domitian's Persecution (93-96 AD)
10. Domitian's Killing (96 AD)
11. Journey to Edessa (177-212 AD)

I made this mission using ROCKNROR and put in a campfire for decoration. It turns out that the campfire incurs AOE1's arrow-savegame bug, so that you can only save the scenario if you play it using ROCKNROR, or probably the ROR HD UPATCH version of AOE:ROR, not using the official "Rise of Rome 1.0A."

However, it's not really a problem because trickiest challenges are in the first minute of gameplay and because even using ROR 1.0a you can play it on EASIEST Mode to make the enemies not tricky to beat.
