Most historians agree that the plague known as the Black Death originated in China in the 14th century, and then spread throughout the rest of the world. As millions died from this plague, fear ruled the hearts of men. This set the stage for some of mankind's worst traits to emerge. Perhaps the often heinous nature of man was best exemplified by the conduct of the corrupt Yuan Dynasty, which bears substantial responsibility for the woe and misery of those times.

The storyline in this campaign is fictional, yet possible. Imagine, if you will, the people of a city being framed by a corrupt government for causing a devastating pandemic. The storyline will explore the impact and repercussions of this injustice, while set within the framework of actual historic events from 14th century China. As the leader of these persecuted survivors, you must summon the indomitable spirit of mankind to inspire and protect them. Do you have what it takes to raise them up from hated outcasts to respected citizens?

A player will interact with 9 cities (7 historically-accurate). Resources, commodities, and available structures follow the Emperor model for the Steel Age. This campaign features a new custom map of "enormous"size.

The download zip file contains an extra file named 'TOOW_Readme.txt'. This text file contains installation instructions, historical background information, campaign design notes, general play tips, and mission hints (warning: contains spoilers). Additionally, other hints are available by viewing the album of playtest screenshots in the Emperor Heaven gallery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This campaign is rated 'normal', and should provide a play experience similar to the campaigns in the core game.

This may be stating the obvious to many of you, but I was recently contacted by a player concerning this campaign, and a problem he had which prevented him from completing it. For those of you with less experience in the "nuances" (less-elegantly called "bugs") of this game, I will share what happened.

=============SPOILER ALERT==============
Stop reading further to avoid reading spoilers of missions 2 and 3.

The player's problem came from the old bug of bribing an invasion coming from your parent city when you are their vassal, and how this bribing reverts THAT CITY to be YOUR vassal instead. This bug really sucks, but I felt I had designed the campaign around it sufficiently by making you (the player) win mission 2 with a goal of having 4 allies. This leads you into the start of the last mission with 4 allies already obtained, and only needing one more ally to complete that 5 allies mission goal. This design discourages a player from breaking the alliances (which is allowed in this campaign) and conquering the other cities. However, this player chose to do that in mission 3. My thought was that if a player wanted to conquer other cities, then they would do that in extended play, after winning the campaign normally. So what happened is that the player's conquest of even one other city in mission 3 prevented him from winning the campaign, because once that city became his vassal, it could not become a rival again, for him to eventually ally with to meet the mission goal.

Another problem the player encountered was with the Mongol Empire in mission 3. The player chose to surrender to their first (and only) scripted invasion. This put him as a vassal, and he immediately began refusing to pay tribute to the Mongol Empire, so that their favor would drop and they would attack him (thus setting up a condition where he could be freed of vassal status). When the Mongols eventually did attack him (unscripted), the player chose to bribe this invasion, thus triggering the vassal/bribe bug again and putting the Mongols as HIS vassal, which once again makes allying with them to meet the mission goal unobtainable.
