Thanks for the data garlef, this is a very productive contribution to the forums. This data provokes some of the best discussions I've read on the forums.

Do you think you can post win % for civ matchups? For this to mean anything at all you'll have to pick a large data set. Something like 'LtCol-Brig V LtCol-Brig 1v1 Supremacy No Mirror' or ALL games where opponents are the same rank or FGO vs FGO or something like that.

Thanks again.

justiw,
I could post that data however the problem is that even if I expand the data set to all matches between players of Rank Major and above (where players are the same Rank) there is "only" ~7200 games, that means an average of roughly 70 games have been played between any two particular civs.
If I exclude the rarely played civs (Russia, Ports, Germany, Brits) who each have less than 400 games played (total that match the criteria), the remaining civs still average under 100 games against every other civ.

I would like to wait a little longer before we journey down that path.

Thanks for posting these stats! Great job as usual.

Nerf Ottomans (more)!
Well, the Ottomans were simply too strong in 1.02. Not every player did this, but many, many Ottomans racked up huge numbers of wins with pure jan\abus. Some kind of nerf had to happen. Whether it was the right way or the wrong way to address the problem is always up for debate, but in the end we can see this -- the pure jan\abus days may be over, but the new Ottomans win a lot against equally skilled players.

It doesn't tell us what needs to be done with future patches, but it seems to clear up any idea that Otto got overnerfed as a civ.

Boost French!
Heh, they're the middle civ in these stats. Hands off!

Garlef, you have a data set above with over 18000 games in it (GO vs GO I believe) which would be great to see. FGO vs FGO should be at least double that. Which would be on average more than 300 civ-civ matchups. Either of those would be enough to make me happy.

Sorry, Joe. I gotta agree with Ender_Ward here, sarcasm or no. It's pretty obvious that Otto needs more nerfing (or just boost everyone else as Ender suggested previously Removing the abus bonus vs HI seems like a good place to start, but won't be sufficient.

Boost French!

Heh, they're the middle civ in these stats. Hands off!

Leaving them untouched is definitely simpler. If the cuirs get the (I hope small) nerf that the forum posters are demanding, then some small compensating boost should accompany it.

Iros needs the most significant nerfs--I saw plenty of good (IMHO) suggestions posted in other threads--and Brits/Germans need to be measurably boosted.

The effects of the last patch are very disappointing. The civ ranking and relative power hasn't changed much at all.

justiw,
The data listed above was for LtCol->Brigadier (not GO or FGO)..
When the dataset is restricted for games between players of the same PR rank, there is only 4223 Games (or 8K civ usages).

For FGO data where players are the same PR rank there is ~6000 Games played. This means that avg # of games between any two civs is roughly 110. Again a small sample size.

Here is a snippet of the data (for FGO ranks) with the most used civ.
NOTE that the size is from 75 to 300 matches, not a great sample size and this is with the most used civ.
France v Aztec: 101-98
France v Brits: 72-61
France v Dutch: 135-133
France v Germans: 35-61
France v Iroquois: 76-110
France v Otto: 95-130
France v Ports: 49-64
France v Russia: 34-41
France v Sioux: 101-95
France v Spain: 139-154

I'd rather not post such a small sample size. But if you want I could email the info to you.

Is there any reason why you're leaving out brig+ ?

I'd like to see just win percentages for all civs for lt col+, without leaving out the top bracket. I understand the top bracket is not useful by itself due to the smaller sample, but it is at least as useful as the lt col numbers when added to that data set.

Roark,
I left out ranks above Brig because the last stats thread was focused on LtCol-Brig ranks.
Adding in higher ranks isn't many more games. In fact it is only 270 more games when limited to matches of players of same PR rank facing off than already posted.

but as we saw, there are some pretty big differences. Like the fact that brits play much more competitively at brig+, and aztecs play much less competitively. Even with the smaller amount of games, I think it would affect the win%s

Garlef, I don't really care if they are the same PR rank. I just would like to see the numbers for a sizable dataset.

For instance, you have GO vs GO without restricting to the same PR rank at 18000+ games.

FGO vs FGO without restricting to the same PR rank could have 40000+ games in it.

Either of these would be interesting.

Garlef, at the top, restricting to same-rank matches just dilutes the pool too much to make a difference (as you said). Especially since I think the skill differences between ranks at that level is a lot different than the skill difference between say a lt colonel and a colonel.

I was looking for an update of the very first table you posted

"1v1 Supremacy No Mirror
Patch 1.03 -> 4/24/2007"

with the players>brigs included

Civ rankings where the avg is the Mean of civ vs civ win percentages. stdev is a measure of performance variability (ie. civ A does well against B,C,D but poorly against E,F,G results in a large stdev, likewise if civ A does the same against all other civs it would have a small stdev)

1. Iro:avg = 62.4, stdev = 5.5
Best vs Russia: Worst vs Otto: Most balanced vs Otto

2. Spain: avg = 55.7, stdev = 8.9
Best vs German: Worst vs Iro: Most balanced vs Otto or Brits

3. Otto: avg = 53.3, stdev = 7.6
Best vs Brit: Worst vs Dutch: Most balanced vs Sioux

4. Dutch: avg = 51.9, stdev = 7.4
Best vs Otto and Port: Worst vs Iro: Most balanced vs Sioux

5. Sioux: avg = 50.9, stdev = 8.9
Best vs Brit and Port : Worst vs Iro : Most balanced vs Dutch and Otto

6. French: avg = 48.8, stdev = 6.2
Best vs Russia : Worst vs Iro : Most balanced vs Port, Brit, German

7. Russia: avg = 47.6, stdev = 11.2
Best vs German : Worst vs Iro : Most balanced vs Aztec

8. Ports: avg = 47.1, stdev = 6.1
Best vs Russia, German, Aztec, Brit : Worst vs Sioux : Most balanced vs French

9. Aztec: avg = 47.0, stdev = 8.2
Best vs Brit : Worst vs Iro : Most balanced vs German and Dutch

10. German: avg = 46.6, stdev = 9.6
Best vs Russia : Worst vs Spain : Most balanced vs French

11. Brits: avg = 41.5, stdev = 4.8
Best vs French : Worst vs Otto (and everyone else, lol) : Most balanced vs French

Conclusions:
Brits just stink in 1v1 although I'm not really sure why. Maybe they have a fundamental flaw, or they are just misused.
The civs with the worst averages are used the least (small data sets).
Russia, Port and German are better than people give credit.
Iro is completely and utterly killing every civ with only the ottomans coming close to breaking even with them.
Iro should get a big nerf because they are pretty much every civ's worst matchup.
Spain should get a small nerf. Maybe shipment speed?
German should get a small boost. Maybe shipment speed?
Russia, Aztec, Ports and Brits would be hard to balance for 1v1 because they are already very good team civs.

justiw,
Which dataset did you use for your numbers? LtCol+ or FGO?

(I am guessing LtCol+)

Note: I corrected the typo in Ports v Brits stats. (55-48 is the correct value).

oh yeah, ltCol+. I forgot to mention that.

Btw, this data is meant to factor out the fact that some civs are played more than others. These averages should be the same as if all civs were played an equal number of times and all matchups occured an equal number of times.

Editing my results to account for the typo. Port jumps up a bit with that one...
