This is a non-linjear campaign based on the game style of the Grand Theft Auto series, especially the later ones.

Update:
Beta version 1.5 finished. Download it from http://www.freewebs.com/alakust/Grand Theft Empires.zip + added a new full map screenshot.

Specs:
- Explore through the huge two-island city surrounded by water, based on a large map.
- Choose among three campaigns: either work for one of the two crime syndicates, or work for the cops. In summarum, there'll be 36 missions.
- Visit common city places like the casino, harbour, ice hockey arena, China Town, city dump, city park and bank.
- Talk to any orange unit in the game (about 400 units). About half of the conversations are interactive.
- Freedom, freedom and some more freedom...
[Full map screenshot], about 400 kb

Storyline:
You are Thomas Hawkeye, a skilled mercenary who works for the Tagliatelle Mafia. Your enemies are the Quadrads, another crime syndicate, and the Cops. One day, after having attacked and assassinated some Quadrad leaders, you are betrayed by the son of the Tagliatelle godfather. That's because the old Godfather wanted you as his substitute, rather than his own son (Why? He's eeeeevil).

The Evil Son kills his father and claims leadership over the Tagliatelles. He also tries to assassin you, but you escape the trap. You are thus left with three options:

1) Pretend as if nothing happened, go back to the Tagliatelles and try to beat the Evil Son from within the syndicate.
2) Join the Quadrads, and defeat the Evil Son by completely destroying the Tagliatelles.
3) Hand yourself over to the police and help them obliterate both the Tagliatelles and the Quadrads. Let's face it, you've had enough of this mafia crap...

Screenies
City Park - From the first island
Bad Guy's Palace - The place you're supposed to destroy in the end of the game
Harbour - Credits to MilitiaMouse for this one. I really loved his idea of a nice harbour.
Another Harbour - Credits to myself
Another City Park - From the second island. Take a look at the statues.
Suspension Bridge - I like this one, but it sure was a hard work doing it...
China Town - Dark and deceitful. Keep your wallet in a hard grip.
Beach - How about some relaxation? Credits to Ana, cause I think she was the first to come up with the idea of using snow as foam.
Yet Another Harbour - The title says it all. Check out the buoys.
Archery Practice - Nothing special, a regular porex-trick. Oh, and check out the boat-cars.
Another Bad Guy's Palace - Credits to my 7 years old little brother, who first mapcopied a siege workshop and a town center together.
Row Houses - Sort of an english block style. I've heard people over there like to live in almost identical houses...

Playtesters
Everyone could playtest if they want, but I'll certainly appreciate if you give me some constructive criticism/suggestions.

Deadline
I intend to finish this scenario within two three I don't know how many months (that is, uh.... may june sometime in the summer early autumn) (Allright, go ahead and kill me - I'm probably not going to finish this until late 2008 )

Trigger count:
1365 (yes, it's true)

You know, this has been tried before and has a lot of flaws:
1-You will get lazy and not continue.
2-You have no set story, which contributes to (1)
3-I assume you're not an experienced designer, which make it even harder.
4-The exact number of triggers is...well, too high.

I tried one of these once and quit, but dont give up! (I quit because i started with the smallest map size on accident, and I triggerd all of the city cars, and i had 100 triggers of cars driving when i realized the mistake i made).

You're game sounds promising. I overrshot with mine wayyy to much, and i ended up with 1/8 of the game finished and a bunch of cars (which for me were rams with faster speed), and trees that could be run over.

I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead and everyday was as long as a life-age of the earth. But it was not the end. I've been sent back until my task is done...

I'll give it a shot anyway. I have no problems in handling either map effects/tricks or triggers, even though they may end up at +500 (my last scenario had +200 triggers). I'll return in a week or so with a entire map shot.

Reich you said this have been tried before - has someone finished such a scenario and uploaded it to the BS? I'd like to try one out to see the flaws and avoid them.

Btw there will be a background story, but the end will vary on which crime syndicate you work for. (Dude, I've got hell lot of work to do! - it's a shame school doesn't end when you turn 16 years old )

Sounds awesome. Have you played Life of a Mercenery? It's liek this, but not based on GTA.

Yes, try Life of a Mercenary by Death wish. it certainly has it's bugs, but it's very impressive.

I started something like this a long time ago with only a basic knowledge of triggers. It was called Life of a Saracen, I think, and needless to say, the tiny bit of it that I finished was pretty bad.

Good luck, you'll need it. (and an incredible amount of patience and will. )

This will need lots of patience and lots of triggers. But, if you do manage to do so then it will be a very sucessful project.

Since I first became a member of AoKH, there have been maybe four or five projects announced like this one, none of which were completed. The simple fact of the matter is that they are the most difficult of all AoK scenarios to design. By all means go ahead, but I am not going to be surprised if you fail.

It's basically just an RPG with non linear triggers, there's nothing that makes it more difficult than a linear RPG. The only thing that would ruin it is to try and make in in the modern age, instead of the period of AoK, that would just make it utterly unconvincing.

Sounds like The Life of a Mercenary.
I have a project that will nclude some GTA styled things in it aswell, not alot but some.

Well, now I know one thing for sure: I'm gonna fail. Because it's soo hard, requires soooo much work and there's soooooo many ways that leads to failure... *smiles ironically*

Seriously, I'm not going to throw this one into the garbage. Just wait a couple of days, all you pessimists, and i'll upload a juicy screenshot.

PS. So far the trigger list is +100, and I haven't yet started to work on the missions. God knows where this'll end...

It sounds good! I like GTAIII very much... Maybe more than AoK...
But one thing: GTAIII has 3 islands not two.....

I'd much rather play San Andreas than some newbish attempt to make it for AoK, just like I'd rather replay FF7 for the 10th time than play some newbish attempt to remake it for AoK... But this sounds more promising.

The only thing that makes me slap my forehead is this

Quote:

Common city stuff like a casino, large harbour, ice hockey arena, soccer stadium, china town, parks, city dump etc.

Casino? Yes, if it's old fashioned, i.e. Middle ages.

Harbour could look good, ice hockey arena, well, I don't think so. They didn't have that then, and would just look stupid since there is no ice hockey units... Find some other sports. Maybe some races? You could have races like in GTA SA where you bet on them.

Also, you could have dog fights, other seedy stuff, just as long as it fits the time. I wouldn't recommend you try to make a soccor stadium, since soccor didn't exist. Maybe some sort of arena, like dog fights, or boar fights, something dodgy like that.

China town would work, have a big interactive market place where you can buy stuff, maybe even some black market goods. Just don't go overboard with the "trying to be modern" thing, or it'll mess up the whole believability factor.

You could also buy properties and generate income. As for missions, just play GTA to get ideas, should be too hard.

Good luck. yes. Good luck.

I suppoce it won't be realistic if it wasn't in middle-ages,since AoK has only middle-age buildings.

As other said.

Let's sort things out some...

This scenario will take place in the middle ages in that sense that it 1) Has medieval buildings, units 2) Is restricted by it's time (the computer wasn't invented, nor the car)

This scenario will not take place in the middle ages in that sense that it uses phenomenons and occurrences of our time, like 1) people may buy modern stuff avaible in the middle-ages 2) people can be involved in mafia conflicts 3) people can play soccer/ice hockey (It wasn't invented, but nothing says it couldn't have been invented that early)

Think of this scenario as an episode from Asterix. The gauls are still restricted to it's time, but they can joke with things that are restricted to our time.

So how are you going to represent soccor without something that makes the player go "Soccor? That's not soccor, that's a relic, two lines of palisades, two villies running around and a priest standing next to a boar... I'm not playing this!". Try making some sports that you can actually make in the editor, or it will ruin the credibility of the scenario. Swimming is another one, using porex, maybe some boat racing, but not soccor. I can't imagine what you could do to make anything even vaguely resembling soccor.
posted 03-02-05 08:48 PM CT (US)     28 / 310
This sounds good, but what if you worked in medieval stuff to fit with AoK? Instead of a casino you could have a tournament. Have missons like killing the King or whoever. Take the GTA idea and make it medieval, then you would have a really good campaign.

Good luck

You should take a look at Boar Ball(2). It is just like soccer, or football, well sorta. It was made by James Blond, and it is a great example of what a medival GTA game should have.

There are also some other good example games, you could get some ideas from, like snow boarding, and Monk football by Ace23

Update:
Soccer skipped, added instead a large colosseum where you can a) bet on different kinds of duels/tournaments b) watch a colosseum show (expect lots of blood =)

Added hospitals, police stations, bomb shops, stables and miscellaneous shops. You can call them healing- and potion shops, sheriff offices and black magic shops if you insist on giving them medieval names.

Added a new game at the casino (gold-mining competition).

Started planning on the missions.

Intend to use "El Cid" and "El Cid Campeador" as main character(s). Why? Because El Cid has both a with/without horse unit. Therefore, you can add a function of buying/selling your horse without renaming the new units.

Screenshot will be avaible in three sizes on saturday.

Trigger amount so far: 130.
