No it's not possible to 'look at the map while editing'.

You have to change it in a text editor and then use Aok to generate the map.

I usually generate my own maps but just saw several and downloaded them this weekend, wanted to tweak a few areas for my pleasure.

It is possible to edit custom random maps in the editor. However, it will no longer be a random map (.rms), instead they must be saved and played as .scx

To place custom maps in the editor we must replace one of the standard ES random maps.

We modded them years ago by hand to reveal the hidden objects and to create other exploitable quirks for SD. Here's a tutorial by Iberico that is a safer more straightforward way of modding the ES RMS:
