Topic Subject: Presenting... The 100 GREATEST AoK Campaigns of All-Time!
posted 09-21-05 09:58 AM CT (US)

*clears throat*

Good Evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the first ever presentation of the one hundred greatest Age of Kings Campaigns ever created, live from the beautiful AoKH Scenario Design Hall. i'm King Bob, and I'll be your host for tonight's presentation.

(Yes, I realize I'm posting this at 10:00 AM ET )

I'm sorry about the wait guys, things have been crazy lately for me. But the votes are finally tallied; the moment you've been waiting for has come. First a note about the list: there isn't really 100 campaigns here. There are are 171 to be exact. But that's close enough, and the more the better, huh? Why so many? because of so many with only one vote. You see, there are only 86 campaigns with more than one, and the rest have only one. So without counting the one-voters we would have 86, with them we have 170. Why not?! So without further ado, we begin:

___________________________________________

What defines a great campaign? Is it the beauty of a well done map? A brilliant piece of fictional storytelling come to life? The thrill of reliving a medieval battle? The satisfaction you get from completing a difficult objective? Of course it's a combination of dozens of things, all of these campaigns are uniquely great. But, for me, I know a great campaign when I beat one... when it's over, it really sinks in. I sit there, in somewhat of a daze, a happy buzz inside me, and I think to my self, 'WOW. That was awesome.'
So I decided to ask you guys which campaigns gave you the same thrill. Dozens of people posted lists, some just one of two, some a full 100. I counted which campaigns were mentioned the most times, and made this list. As you scroll through it, I hope the campaigns here bring back memories of good times in front of the computer. And by all means, if you see one you haven't tried yet, especially in the top 50, download it now! I assure you, you won't be dissapointed in any of these fine pieces of work.

So here they are, the greatest, as decided by the good people of Age of Kings Heaven who have played them, made them, and loved them. We begin tonight with number one. And the #1 greatest campaign Any Guesses?... *Opens Envelope*...

Well, that's the top 50, but from here the data gets a little crazy, It would be impossible to arrange these next campaigns in any fair order, because they all have the same number of votes. I'm sorry I have to do it this way, but here are the rest of the campaigns, each involved in one of three ties - those with 3, 2, and 1 vote. All of the campaigns which received the same number of votes, like these next 16, with three, are officially tied.

*APPLAUSE*

...And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen, 171 campaigns - each special, all great! The Greastest, in fact! Congratulations to all of the designers!

*ENORMOUS APPLAUSE*

Whew! You can see why it took me so long to finish it!
Now let's take a look at which designers went home with the most (virtual) hardware:

  • Designers with the most votes:

    1. Ingo van Thiel: 104 (4 campaigns)
    2. Marko Crnigoj: 65 (5)
    3. Mark Stoker: 43 (4)
    4. Berserker Jerker: 41 (2)
    5. Gordon Farrell: 33 (3)

  • Designers with the most campaigns:
  • Marko Crnigoj: 5 (65 votes)
  • Ingo van Thiel: 4 (104 votes)
  • Mark Stoker: 4 (43 votes)
  • Puzzleman: 4 (though unfourtunately, only 4 votes)
  • Zanzard Lothar: 4 (5 votes)
Note: Several teams had many campaigns, ENOTH with 6 being the overall winner of this category.

Well, that's all I have to say, folks. I hope you agree with me in saying that these are all truly great campaigns. You should download and play as many of them as possible. From the AoKH Scenario Design Forum, this King Bob VI saying good night and happy gaming!

Amazing, KB6, you've done an outstanding work! What are we going to do with the list now? It's so great we cannot let it sink into the Realm of the Sunken Threads, but on the other hand - don't we have enough stickied threads in the SD forum already? Oh, and how are we going to deal updates, because one thing is for sure and that is that there will be more great campaigns which will qualify for this list.

Again, a terrific work! Plus, a very entertaining post...

    Thanks, Oliver.
We could make it an annual thing or something, but that would be a lot of work for about a dozen or so great campaigns likely to come out in that period.

Very nice work, Bob. An interesting list, although predictable (of course ).

Wow... although Sabato and Ulio were bound to come first, there are quite a few surprises in there. I think Revenge of the Templars and Bouren both deserved to come higher than they did.

Excellent! More than half of them I have yet to play! And ofcourse, the top ranks were highly predictable.

I think this should be periodically repeated. Although the gap should be long, about a year or two, so that enough new campaigns have been produced too make a fresh list.

I think if it was refreshed each year it would be very unlikely that the top 5 would change, I mean they are made by the best. So it is a good idea to refresh, yet perhaps much woulnd't change untill Ingo's new one comes out 'when the wheel breaks' or something like that Or Bj's Sabato lives. Those are the ones which would break the top 5.

THis just might be me, BUt you missed a few good ones, that should have been at least in the top 50, if not top 10 or so (I was to late to vote)

    1- The fall of artal
    2- Final hour
3- And far more... those though might be the to big ones... I mean Final hour I could play for hours again and agian, and same with artal, I will never get board... anyways, I'm a bit disapointed on those two at least.

I'm just glad one of mine actually made it on the list. I'm going back to figure out who voted for Fithel.

Ah, so it was Tanneur. I half expected it to be Ana. Oh well, next year it should go higher, like, when Fithel is actually beatable.

Ingo steals four of the five spotlights...as usual.

Same ol', same ol'. Ingo should surprise us and make a campaign with a really crappy cutscene and intro scenario, and then blow us away with 3 other godly scenarios...just for kicks.

How about it, Ingo? Although, you may/may not have retired from AoK Designing.

Thanks for the proofreading, erabi, Ana, and deathwish, I'll get those fixed . I also removed the third designer award category because the more I think about it, it's not fair - it would benefit, for example, someone with one 20-vote campaign on the list more than someone with two 20-vote campaigns and another one further down the list.

Thanks for finding the time to tally up the votes, King Bob. This was a good idea.

Congrats to all designers who have a scenario in the list

I have to say to Ingo van Thiel, you are a legend! You have made a great contribution to this site. I also hope you don't give up making more campaigns in the future!

The same of course goes to Marko C. also.

So will this get a permanent posting? I mean that will there be a link for this list on the site or will it stay a topic?

*starts a chant of 'sticky sticky'*

Woah ... Truly Countless Bodies got more votes than Final Hour? What were you all thinking?

This was a good and fun topic, but unfortunately it didn't capture enough interest among the members to be considered for sticky. That and in the end it didn't do what it intended.

I think forum polls and contests have to be well planned and more importantly be well promoted, e.g. keep the topic updated and produce results in a timely fashion.

Perhaps that was a poor choice of words, what I meant is that many members even those who voted felt that the results were somewhat flawed by the limited turn out of voters.
