Topic Subject: Changing the Pitch in the Editor ( A How To Guide )
posted 21 November 2002 11:29 AM EDT (US)
I just discovered something quite interesting. Now before you walk away and say "I've already knew this", hear me out.

I just figured out something using the Zoom Editor, that saves me a bunch of time. Thought I'd share it.

Create a new movie track, then create two way points. On both waypoints, use the default angle. And click update for both. Save and Exit.

Edit the angle using the Zoom Editor to 5 or 10. Or 0, but zero tends to really lag...

Re-enter the editor, and re-select the movie track. On the second waypoint, click update.

Slide the bar beside the play button to slowly shift the movie. You will notice it shifts almost every angle that people most likely will use. But you will also notice you can stop this movie at anytime, and still movie the camera at anytime. Thus, allowing you to use any of these angles.

This is really saving me all a lot of time.

In other words, the Zoom Editor can be used to create a "pitch template" as I like to recall it as. You could have one for angles that are looking downwards, and ones which are looking upwards.

At first, I didn't really understand what you meant. After I tried it out, I must say this is the best discovery about changing the camare angle that will save literally tons of time! Great job, Shadow! Now we don't need to exit and reload AoM a hundred times to do a cinematic . (Now we don't need the Xpack to make great movies .)

This awesome discovery deserves an article.

Now we don`t have to wait for 6 months so that we could pay Microsoft to make great movies hehehe, just a joke there

Request: Can you post a blank scenario with the camera pitch camera track to use as a base.

but how to look on the sky with it ??? *crying*

Stop crying, you big baby . Using the Zoom Editor, set the angle to around 10 degree. You should be able to see across the horizon. To look straight up in the sky, use a negative angle... something such as -10 degree.

BUT THATS THE POINT WHY IM CRYING !!!
when i set it to 10 degree (the pitch angle) i again look only in the game view and nt to the sky or dunno in some other angle - always the game angle !!!!! i become mad with trying it !

I second that. It would be really useful, especially for people who do not want to download the zoom editor.

arnitald,

After you changed the pitch, you must exit AoM, and then re-enter in order for it to take effect .

hey, wassup Byz

Shadow, I just dl'ed the zoom editor and got it to work the way you described. Very cool! I have a couple of quick questions though:

  1. Do you have to repeat the process for every track in the cinematic? (i.e., create 2 waypoints, update, save, exit, tweak in ZoomEd, reload, select 2nd waypoint, and update again, etc...). If not, can you describe how you do that?
  2. You say that when you click the "reset" button in zoom editor, the "user.cfg" file will be deleted. Now, I didn't have a user.cfg before I used ZoomEd, but what other information is potentially stored there? I would hate to hit reset and have the file deleted once other information has been written to it.

thanks a bunch, and this really is very cool!

YEs you have to repeat the process for different tracks. ITs very annoying, because i got a very slow comp, and AoM takes 5 minutes just to start

Yep. I know it can be annoying, but it is a lot better than having to edit and angle, exit AoM, edit the angle using the zoom editor, enter aom...ect ect like you would if you were only using the zoom editor.

Until they add a pitch editing feature, this is the fastest way.

About the user.cfg file. Lamir( EO ) and Azn have a fantastic site all about this sort of thing. That file is mentioned, along with a bunch of other ones. Such as files that whene edited, allow you to change the angle of units and so on. Really nice.

...check the FAQ for a link to it.

hey obi and shad

thanks for the quick replies

On a related note, I noticed in the game.con file (under "World" settings) that there are controls for pitch forward and pitch backward (ctrl up/down and ctrl-numpad8/2, respectively). It's strange that these don't work in the game or the editor. I changed these controlls' settings from "world" to "game" and then "editor" just to see if this had an effect either in-game or in the editor, but no luck. What's the deal with that? Any idea? I just think it's weird that the commands are in the game but not accessible. I bet they can be somehow, but no one's figured out how yet

And I wasn't able to find the thread you mentioned about the user.cfg stuff. If you know which one it is, could you post the link here? tnx again! you guys are a great help
