Topic Subject: Time Travel in Togo Mafia - Sign Ups
posted 07-04-09 06:55 PM CT (US)

Two days ago farmers, villagers and others of the central Togolese savannah saw a flash of light and heard a deep boom in the distance. An invisible wave washed over the area killing scores and shaking the few survivors to their very core. Time had been ripped asunder.
The survivors, recovering, had an attuned sense of time, of the future. They felt the oncoming apocalypse.
Some discovered time was manipulable, some discovered they could travel through it, change the past, and change the future. Some felt nothing.
Tomorrow they gather from miles around in the local market village of Takodé, keen on finding the perpetrators and preventing their doom.

The cause of this? Some nefarious locals had years ago discovered a strange otherworldly stone in the countryside which contained unbelievable power. Of totally unknown origin, deep in its heart is a swirling, distorting, timey-wimey mist which hypnotises and corrupts those that would have it.
Through years of crude experiments on this stone the bearers grew destructive and hateful. Eventually they made progress, causing the incident, disrupting and breaking time in the surrounding area. It would only take ten more days to cause the complete destruction of time and space, and the stone yearned for this. Those that held it yearned for this too.
But could it be avoided?
As it took 2 days for the locals to recover from the trauma and come together, they had until the end of Day Eight.

Takodé is a small administrative centre for the agricultural plains of the surrounding area, where coffee, cotton and cocoa are all grown. In years past phosphate was mined but the industry wanes now. There exists a sturdy old meeting hall where the days’ discussions will take place. At night the people will return to their homes in Takodé or to their lands in the countryside. Most of the residents are dead now, and some have run away. The authorities are vanished or long fled.
You’ll have to sort this out yourselves.

RULES
  • No post editing; no quoting emails from me; no posting while dead; no communicating outside the thread unless permission is specified.
  • The game ends at the end of the eighth day, when the apocalypse occurs or the stone is destroyed. Any time travellers cannot go further forward in time than Night 8.
  • Days and nights have strict deadlines. Days are 120 hours, nights are 48 hours. As there are only eight days and eight nights at max, this should be a relatively fast paced game.
  • Time is in flux. The future and the past are not fixed. Death is not necessarily permanent.
  • Every player must vote every day. If a majority vote is reached, the day is not ended until the deadline or until every player has voted. Any players who fail to vote within the deadline are marked as voting for No Lynch. Unvote before changing your vote.

Oh well. I declare this game a failure.
Here's all the roles for any interested readers or anybody who wants to steal any ideas (feel free to).

    Nefarious Locals / Main Mafia
X, your name is Emmanuel Jourias. 39 years old. You are the leader of the group of stone bearers.
Your group has time travelling abilities.
You were once a phosphate miner, and it is when mining that you discovered the otherworldly stone which now consumes you.
You are the bearer of the stone and you furiously work at unlocking its secrets every night. Being the closest to the Incident when it occurred has left you sometimes one second out of sync with reality. Anybody attempting to find or attack you will have trouble doing so for this reason.
Each night you may send an email to me targeting somebody to be killed on any night of your choosing. For instance, on Night 3 you may choose somebody to be killed on Night 1. On Night 4 you may choose somebody else to be killed on Night 1 as well. Changing the past is possible, and the victims’ lynch votes and night actions will be wiped from history.
Through doing this it is possible to change the result of a lynch, if the vote is close, effectively bringing a lynched player back to life.
Likewise you may choose to have people attacked in the future. Perhaps on Night 1, you send Y to the future to do the killing so the town have no death to investigate on the first day.
If you or your subordinates are lynched, any actions you did in the future still take place in that future as it was before the lynch in your personal timeline.
    The possibilities are manifold.
Should both of your subordinates die you may attempt to recruit another player one time only to replace them.

X, your name is Ita Jourias, Emmanuel’s wife. 33 years old. You are second in command and take over Emmanuel’s responsibilities should he die.
You were once a Union representative before you met Emmanuel and settled down in the area. As the stone corrupted him, it corrupted you too. As you worked on it, you and your husband shied away from public life. You are wisely paranoid that survivors of the initial incident will be attempting to stop you bringing your plan to fruition, so each night you send an email to me targeting somebody to be watched on any night of your choosing.
You time travel to the night yourself and watch a single person’s activities, usually giving you a solid idea of their role.
You return to the present at daybreak.

Y, your name is Kléber Siou. 21 years old. You are the third in command and take over Ita’s responsibilities should she or Emmanuel die. You take over Emmanuel’s role should they both die. Until then, you conduct the killings as ordered by Emmanuel.
You were previously a local boy brought up in the coffee trade who had joined the Togolese army when 15. Emmanuel and Ita persuaded you to abandon your position while you were on leave some months ago, by showing you the stone. It swiftly overwhelmed your soul and now you live to see it unleashed. Nonetheless you remain skilled in combat.
After time travelling to kill adversaries, you return to the present at daybreak.

X, X, Y: You win at the end of the eighth day if you are alive. The three of you may communicate with each other over email. Night action results will be sent to all of you.

    Undercover government agents
X, your name is Ibrahim Franjo, you are a 58 year old government agent representing President Faure Gnassingbé. Along with at least one other unknown to you, you were sent undercover to Takodé after being tipped off about illicit activity. You quickly discovered a population with rumoured abilities to time travel, and you have been ordered to destroy them all as they pose a threat to the government. (note that not everybody can time travel)
You win if all time travellers in the region are dead before the end of Day 8, including those unlocking the power of the stone. (i.e., you win with some of the town)
Each night you can send an email to me targeting somebody you will kill.
Should you target a fellow agent, you will discover them and be able to work with them.

X, your name is Martine Olympio, you are a 34 year old government agent representing President Faure Gnassingbé.
You have discovered villagers with time manipulation abilities exude a unique form of radiation, and each night you send an email to me targeting somebody you will investigate for their level of radiation.
Should you target a fellow agent, you will discover them and be able to work with them.

    Serial Killer
X, your name is Jorge Agualusa. You are a 48 year old Portuguese expatriate who was working on a Fairtrade chocolate documentary before the incident. The time damage affected you severely, causing your consciousness to flitter in and out of different times, different days. After mere hours this sent you quite insane, unable to tell fiction from reality, unable to tell where or who you were. You now have some control over the condition and you can time travel more conventionally. But preventing the random flitters requires constant concentration which causes enormous stress. You have discovered murder helps alleviate the torment, if only for a while. You hope if you can kill everyone, you will heal fully.
Each night you send an email to me targeting somebody to be killed on any night of your choosing. For instance, on Night 3 you may choose somebody to be killed on Night 1. On Night 4 you may choose somebody else to be killed on Night 1. Changing the past is possible, and the victims’ lynch votes and night actions will be wiped from history.
Likewise you may choose to have people attacked in the future. For instance on Night 1, it is advisable to go to the future to do the killing so the town have no death to investigate on the first day.
You return to the present at daybreak.
If you fail to submit a night action, the consequences for your mental state are unpredictable.
You win alone, when all others are dead. You have until the end of the eighth day, when otherwise either the apocalypse occurs or the stone is destroyed, shattering your mind once and for all.

    Vigilante (of a kind)
X, your name is Komi Apel. You are 51 years old.
You are a local middle-man, buying from the cotton and coffee growers and selling on to distributors, even dealing with international conglomerates. Your family all died in the Incident.

The incident shook you deeply. It didn’t seem to affect anybody quite as badly as it affected you, and that’s scary. Quick experimentation taught you that you can travel in time! And not just a few hours or days, like others around, but years. And what can you do with such power?.. Your mind can’t help wonder, can’t help hope against hope ... that maybe you can stop this from ever happening, that maybe you can change history and save your family.
You have a ONE-TIME-USE night action, whereby you go back in time a chosen number of years to kill somebody of your choice.
You must send me an email with your target and the number of years back you wish to travel. Bear in mind you’re not a strong man and you don’t want much fuss – you’ll have to go back to when your target is a child.
But don’t overshoot it – going back to before your target is born is waste!
Succeeding sees the target permanently killed, disappearing from the game. Choose the right victim, and maybe the stone is never discovered? Or maybe someone else takes their place – is it fate for the stone to be discovered? Surely not; you’re adamant you can prevent the coming doom.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.
    -
ModNote: possibly the most powerful role. Can end the game by choosing Emmanuel Jourias and going back enough years so Emmanuel is under 10. However, this will only work towards the endgame – within the last few nights. If he chooses Emmanuel early in the game, another character may replace him and much will be the same. Will get stuck in the past, unable to return to the present... so if he goes back a lot of years, he will have died of old age before the game before. If he goes back only a few, he will 'return' dramatically older. Etc.

    Time Slower
X, your name is Rebecca Kéma. You are 17 years old and have spent a hard short life working the coffee crops for minimal wage and reward. It is a graft dependent on time, waiting out the seasons, for growth, for ripening, before you can eventually harvest. How you longed for faster growing, for longer harvesting seasons!
The incident two days ago has left you with a unique power – you may extend or shorten any day of your choosing up to 6 times by 24 hours each time.
You may extend or shorten a single day multiple times. However, the extension or shortening is always 24 hours and you may only use the ability 6 times through the entirety of the game.
Please email me during the day in question when you wish to invoke the power.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Role Blocker
X, your name is Yasmine Joueur. You are a 10 year old orphan who resents anything and everything... with time travel abilities.
Each night you send an email to me targeting somebody to bullishly attack on any night of your choosing in the past, future or present, hopefully stealing their food to provide much needed sustenance and sending them running off. You return to the present at daybreak.
For example on night 1 you can target somebody to attack on night 3, or on night 3 you can go back to the past of night 1 or 2 and target somebody you know was definitely up and about. Sleeping citizens locked in their houses may be immune to your minor muggings.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Doctor past
X, your name is Dr Kolo Kokou. You are a 35 year old doctor with time travel abilities.
You have long worked in humanitarian medical centres surrounding Takodé. Healing the sick is what you love! ... but there’s nothing worse than being too late ... being unable to do anything for a patient ... watching them die. You are haunted by your young daughter dying of a rare cancer some ten years ago.
But what if you could go back? What if you had caught the disease earlier? ...
Each night you send an email to me targeting somebody to protect and heal in the past. You must choose a previous night, and you will time travel back and protect that person then. You can save many lives, avert many murders. You can go back to the same night multiple times – going back to night 1 on both night 2 and night 3, for instance.
You return to the present at daybreak.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Doctor future
X, your name is Dr Marie Totomoko. You are a 29 year old doctor with time travel abilities.
Technically a ‘government doctor’ based in Takodé, you blaze your own trail and heal all you can. Working for the government is just convenient. It helps you get to the patients as fast as possible. The recent incident has given you odd time travel abilities.
Each night you send an email to me targeting somebody to protect and heal in the future. You must choose a future night, and you will time travel forward and protect that person. You return to the present at daybreak.
You would ideally like to go backwards in time as well... time travel is unpredictable so perhaps this ability will be developed in time?
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Protector present
X, your name is Jean Sammond. You are a 40 year old ex-mercenary from Chad who can protect people at night.
Undoubtedly skilled at what you do, you have travelled around Africa working as a mercenary and bodyguard as and when needed for whoever could pay the most. This saw you working for paramilitary groups, tyrants and gang leaders. It was only recently that you abandoned such work, ostensibly for moral reasons. Today you arrive in Takodé, and having missed the Incident you hope to do whatever you can to help...
You’re not completely pure hearted however, and you won’t protect anyone without trying to swipe their wallet or phone. Who knows what you might find? And it gives you such a thrill...
Each night you send an email to me targeting somebody to protect and attempt to thieve from.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Investigator past
X, your name is Daniel Krice. You are a 67 years old.
You’ve seen many changes befall your country, much strife, much pain and hardship. You no longer work the cotton fields as in years past, preferring to stay in Takodé and watch the vibrant businesses. You do enjoy watching...
Days ago the incident caused the biggest changes in your life yet – you can literally travel in time!
Each night you send me an email targeting somebody whose night actions you wish to watch on any night in the past. You may go back in time to the same night multiple times and watch different people do their different actions – the possibilities are manifold. You return to the present at daybreak.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Investigator future
X, your name is Gloria Lodé. You are 14 years old.
You’re a little spy and you have long been a tomboy rascal. Really you should be working – maybe selling fruits on a market stall? If not, then learning! But no. You spy on Takodé’s comers and goers, delighting in their secrets, catching out the liars, the tricksters. And now, since the incident... you have some strange time travel abilities.
Each night you send me an email targeting somebody whose night actions you wish to watch on any night in the future. You cannot watch people in the present night nor in the past – though maybe these are skills which will eventually develop?
You return to the present at daybreak.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Investigator
X, your name is Pierre Ayepeya. You are 43 years old.
You are all that remains of the police force, and you spend your time sitting at your familiar desk in your familiar office. What’s going on scares you, and frankly you’re glad you felt no timey-wimey effects from the incident.
But you’re adamant to get the bottom of this mystery, even if sneaking out at night unnerves you.
Each night you send me an email targeting somebody to be investigated. Hopefully you’ll have some information on file, but if not you suppose you’ll have to go slinking into the streets...
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Meeting Hall Cleaner/Investigator
X, your name is Sophie Sakelele. You are 24 years old.
The meeting hall is your place of work. You’ve long been employed as a cleaner and eventually you were given an administrative position over the meeting hall as well. You unlock the doors each morning and you close up at night.
More crucially, you clean up each night once everyone has gone home. Mostly you don’t take any notice of what is swept away, but maybe you should look closely every now and then?
Each night you email me targeting somebody whose meeting hall waste you’d like to have a good look at. Who knows what clues you will find?
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

ModNote: What is found is down to moderator discretion on each night – whatever seems interesting and hints and their role. For Komi Apel perhaps she would find scribbles regarding complex butterfly effect consequences.

    Joker (wildcard)
X, your name doesn’t matter anymore. You forget your exact age. Does it matter? You are haunted by a life of unspeakable acts. You need to forget. To change.
‘If I were to be born again, I’d like to be something completely different. I’d quite like to be Norwegian. Or Persian, perhaps. Not Ivorian, though – that’d feel too much like moving down the street...’
You arrive in town today with a blank slate. You want a new life. You can create your name, your memories, your life, your jobs, your personality, your age, et al, all from scratch. Whatever you choose and declare in the game thread, or to me via email, become fact, become reality.
After deciding an identity, each night this identity will be further officialised, with fake passports, faked photographs, fake job references, etc, provided piece by piece. It is therefore advisable to formulate a detailed identity as soon as possible and email it to me, so all the paperwork (to seem innocent to investigators etc) is completed as soon as possible.
You may change your mind and rethink your entire identity on a whim, and the official papers will be duly replaced.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

ModNote: Joker role can choose own night action but it has to fit into the plot, and whatever is chosen has a decent chance of failure. Likely night actions would be going around watching people, or role blocking people, or protecting people. Chance of success depends on ‘level’ of night action chosen – if he chooses to be a vigilante, he may have a 33% chance of killing himself, 33% chance of success, 33% chance of failure/exposure in day post.

    Gecko
X, you are a 4 year old time-travelling gecko. You have spent your comfortable life on the wall of the meeting hall. However, a time-travelling scorpion has spotted you and is now keen on eating you. Each night you must choose another night to time-travel to and hide in. This can be a past or future night. You then return to the present at daybreak.
The scorpion does the same in his chase for you; if you both choose the same night he may kill you.
You never sleep at night, being a gecko, and you may over hear or spot some activity should any occur in the meeting hall on the night you travel to.
If the scorpion dies, you may concentrate fully on investigating others, and will be able to target people to investigate as well as nights to travel to and investigate in.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Scorpion
X, you are a 4 year old time-travelling emperor scorpion. You have spent your comfortable life in the nooks of the meeting hall floor. You’ve recently spied a time-travelling gecko piping up during meeting hall discussions who you would very much like to eat. However, each night the gecko time travels to another night.
Each night you must choose another night to time travel to in the hopes of finding the gecko. This can be a past or future night. If you and the gecko both travel to the same night, you may kill him.
You never sleep at night, being a scorpion, and you may over hear or spot some activity should any occur in the meeting hall on the night you travel to. You then return to the present at daybreak.
If the gecko dies, you will have a full stomach and so will be able concentrate fully on investigating others, and will be able to target people to investigate as well as nights to travel to and investigate in.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse and enjoying a good meal.

    Husband & Wife
X, your name is Nicolas Abbass. You are 32 years old. Bella Abbass is your wife.

Y, your name is Bella Abbass. You are 24 years old. Nicolas Abbass is your husband.

You may communicate with each over email.
You are cocoa growers, and you have recently been granted a promising ‘fairtrade’ deal giving you more money for your harvest than ever before.
The Incident largely passed you by, your plantation being only the fringe of the affected area. You still visit Takodé daily however as an apocalypse is a major problem. You go back to the plantations each night and protect each other should you be targeted, potentially throwing off any snooping attackers or investigators.
You win at the end of the eighth day if the fiends unlocking the stone are all killed, averting the apocalypse.

    Final game notes:
-If any of the 3 stone bearers survive to the end of the game, everybody alive ‘wins’ and is transferred to a higher plane of existence – ala the end of 2001 a space odyssey (etc)
-If all 3 stone bearers are dead at the end of the game, the stone disintegrates, time reassembles and all characters lose their time travel abilities. Any gov’t agents alive at this point win as technically there are no time travellers left – which is their ultimate aim. The serial killer wins as he no longer suffers from the time pain and his mental health begins to recover. The serial killer and gov’t agents are unaware they only need to destroy the stone bearers.
-Dead people could 'vote' for lynches each day through email to me. If they were rescued by a doctor going into the past, then the vote would count with the others for days they are suddenly alive for. There's lots of this sort of past manipulating.

I agree, you could have at least postponed it man!

This is easily the most complex looking Mafia I've ever seen too.

It really needed to start before now if I was going to have the time to see it through to the end, unfortunately.

I'm impressed, and saddened. So let me get this straight, the town wins if the mafia wins and the town loses if the mafia loses?

From the notes it seemed like it could have been a really awesome game assuming everyone was decently active; too bad not enough signed up.

Not quite, essentially whoever is alive at the end of the game wins.
The mafia's objective is not to kill everybody - just to survive to the end.

If the Mafia succeed, everybody alive wins and becomes god-like.
If the Mafia fail, everybody alive wins and things go back to normal. (Though most probably die prematurely due to radiation-induced cancer.)

Shrink, I'd edited that out and save it - you might want to run the game later, you know?
