Many scenarios have mild explicitives in them. Even Ulio was known to use "Damn" a few times. But to add an extra feel to the game, how do you feel about using, say, milder words. I was thinking about having a menu system with a options choice. Among the choices would be a profanity filter, with the default choice on, obviously. So in other words, the only way that these words could be viewed by the player is by his explicit consent. Do you agree with this choice?

Some language is acceptable, while some is not. We gotta stay in the lines so people of all ages can download the scenarios. Giving them an option is not always the best idea in some cases.

Of course, it's up to you. What system do you plan on using?

Well come on, what would you say if you were stabbed by a sword?

What I had in mind was a looping change view trigger. Display Instructions/Send Chat would be used next to flags on the map. A king is provided to make the choices. Among the choices on the menu are "Play Game," "Options," and other stuff (I'm not giving it all away).

That was kind of a problem in The Chaos Realms beta... I can't count how many times they said the "F" word... Hopefully, the creator changes that.

Sounds interesting. If I did get stabbed with a sword, I probably would have a few choice words to say to my opposition.

But if you do, make sure to give words of caution to the player about the content.

Damn is probably about as high I would go, if you want to use words like S***, F*** and other ones, or suggestive themes or phrase, You can do it, but warn about it in you're description.

On the flipside, don't be cheesy and say "Darn, or freaking, or peanut butter, or HOLY CEILING TILES Batman"

Its possible to not sound like a four year old, but an actual adult, without being to profane.

So, like many things, in moderation.
A single cuss word here or there, probably wouldn't be awful, but try to avoid it, or let it get out of hand.

I guess Cobra is right. I'll set my limit at "Damn" and forget about the profanity filter.

Many great scenarios have high levels of profanity, especially in those campaigns that were created by AOKPunk.

Swear words are overrated, people use them to 'be cool', after all, in the middle ages, the English language was, in my opinion, much more 'beautiful' back then.

Actually, Middle English did not treat many of our 'swearwords' as profanities. For example, many of them simply described bodily functions. These were not thought of as expletives. F*** was, though.

Hmm..interesting. I don't mind profanity being used in scenarios, as long as it's kept within character.

The "F" word was never British it's American and made its way to Europe via Hollywood.

The "F" word was derived from German. It was first published in Latin in Cambridge, England, in a poem called "Flen, Flyys, and Freris” ("Fleas, Flies, and Friars"). I think that's enough history of a major swear word.

@ Darkmaster

Lol it's not used in German at all and not really in Britain, especially not with so many meanings like in the US.

Origin and common use are two different pair of shoes.

Heck's just a milder term for Hell used by people who want children to not swear.
Not knowing all the swear words or what they are to me means that you end up saying them not knowing what you mean, what they say is their attitude not their knowledge of profanity.
I know numerous swear words but use them rarely.
It all depends on who they want to be and just denying children the knowledge may make them resentful and more likely to use them when they eventually learn them as everyone does unless they spend their life in complete isolation just getting food through a flap in the door.

I'm just going on and on and on and on and on and on.....

I said it was DERIVED from German. There's a word in German which sounds just like the noun-tense of the verb f***.

Use your own judgment, you can tell when you're crossing the line.

There was a discussion about this a while ago, it had to do with whether a warning about language should be included and many of the things talked about in this topic.

Maybe someone has the link, I can't seem to find it?

Get over yourself, xyzomma! **** is a cuss word but you use it all the time.

Edited for language. (Even with the last letter censored, it gives a clear message on what it means.)

Television started out with mild cuss words,,and now look at it. I say "keep the games clean ". I have no problem with a list of milder terms ,ie: Heck , Shoot ,etc. There's lots of good verbs out there just waiting to be used.

Well, sometimes "harsher words" display emotions as well (e.g. anger, rage), which are harder to capture with "lesser words." However, I'm not saying we should all just be mad and start cussing like low-lifes. What I am saying is that the use of certain words, IMHO, is acceptable given that the author has used it appropriately ( ironic, huh ), and has clearly warned his audience about "mild language."

I always heard that the "f-word" comes from england where people could only procreate with the permission of the king. So, they would post signs on the door that read "Fornication Under Consent of King" That story is probably an urban legend, but you gotta admit it's at least a good story.

I'm sorry but Zyxo's right. I'm not one to swear, in fact I don't even like to hang out with people who swear.

But in my project, sometimes people are wayup the creek with out a damn paddle in sight, so they sometimes use that word... What can I say?
