Topic Subject: Unit-stat edited without Changing *.DAT(GeniED2)
posted 01-05-05 11:29 AM CT (US)
If you have downloaded and played the newest campaign in the Blacksmith, Robin Hood by my friend Hawk_DaghT, you can find the units in it have their stat edited without altering any *.DAT files on your computer. I would like to explain/share the reason of it here, in order to save the AOK:TC SD world under the upcoming AOE3.

The story is like this: I introduced GeniED2 to my Chinese team (Hawk) and we started to try, translate and research on the programme. The aforementioned element is one of the results.

In normal games, the units with their names, hitpoints, attacks, ownerships changed by triggers will have their "selecing names" shown as "%s" instead of the original names. This tells the game treats them different to other units, and therefore it is obvious that a saved game will also keep the information about the stat of this kind of unit.

After you created a scenario with an altered *.DAT files, you can test it, then save it to a *.GAX file. The saved game (*.GAX) will keep most of the edited stat of the units, allowing others without the same altered *.DAT files to play them "rightly".

Our experiments show that the following stat can be "saved" through a saved game:

-Hitpoint
-Attack point
-Name (Language ID)
-Icon ID ()
-Line of sight ()
-Garrison capacity ()
-Movement Speed ()
-Attack range ()
-Reload time ()
-Armour
-Projectile unit ID ()
-Blast radius

However, the method is a double-edged sword. Some disadvantages of it are:

-The lost of intro map/screen.
-No more multi-scenario campaign.
-Players have to reselect the computer players in chat window(Alt+T) if Taunt-Ai is used. (not really a drawback but still annoying)
-Ai files are not included. (unauthenticated)
-Bigger file size. (still a problem)
-Walkable Cliff/Buildings set before the saving time will be disabled. (a well-known issue)
-Messed recent hitpoint for Gaia hitpoint-altered units. (doesn't really matter)
-Dead Unit ID cannot be "saved". (which will disable many interesting tricks)
-Game Version Issue (1.0, 1.0b or 1.0c?)

After reading this about 10 times i figured out what you're saying. Pretty neat idea. Opened a new door for me...

I wrote the content in hot haste, therefore its readability may become a bit lower. Nevertheless, I will proofread it later.

Bloody brilliant! Just what I need! Many thanks and congratulations to you and your teammates, scenario_t_c

This is a truly great discovery - it opens up yet more doors to scenario designers.

Well done, that is rather ingenious. Presumably then this download is a gax rather than cpx file. Are there any drawbacks - what about AI files etc? Btw I thought Genied sometimes only changed the figure that appeared rather than the underlying statistic?

I think some disadvantages of the method are:

-Lost of intro map/screen
-Players have to reselect the computer players in chat window(Alt+T) if the scenario(?) used Taunt-Ai tech.
-Ai files are not included (unauthenticated)
-Bigger file size

On the other hand, GeniED2 can indeed only change the displayed value of something like attack and armour points. However, I myself had taken a little part in the old AoK unit stat editor project before GeniED2. Therefore, I know some of the hex-editing skills to change the actual values of them and test out the result.

IIRC, isn't there some kind of problem with downloading .GAX files?

I didn't really understand your question, but if what you meant is the Game Version Issue, it is because saved game files in 1.0, 1.0b and 1.0c version of game cannot be loaded by each other. BTW, *.GAX files should be put in "SaveGame" folder instead of "Scenario" or "Campaign".

Maybe if this blows up, they'll start a new section in the Blacksmith, Saved Games?

@scenario_t_c

Someone said that you couldn't play other people's .GAX files. I guess that was wrong.

Huu... that was not completely at fault, as long as the players and designers have different versions of game copies. Other than that, there should be no problem.

Somebody published a saved game with altered files about two or three years ago, if my memory serves me well... it had some super archers with uber attack and uber range, long before GeniEd. Is this the same method? If it makes players play gax files, it looks like it.

I believe that person used some kind of cheat/trainer to alter the unit stats after the scenario was loaded, and then saved it so other people could play it with those alterations. So it's basically the same as this, making use of the knowledge that saved games store some stats, and just having a different method of initially setting those stats.

Not sure, But from my experience, choosing those ending with "_D" gives the dead Unit ID

Just a tip that might or might not help u

Yes, I remember that method. You can do it with a simple program like Cheese-o-matic, then save the scenario as a savegame and get the player to play from there.

I swear, no other game can be as extensively modded as AoK. Nice discovery.

Yeah, I had discovered this a while ago, but found it to not be very useful, as it can mess up a ton of triggers, tricks, etc. Also, there is a higher chance of crashes occuring due to this.

You can even watch recorded saved games which were played using a different *.DAT file.

GAX can save unit-stat edited without changed by triggers.

And I didn't upload any *.AI/PER files in that zip of RH.It seems there are no trouble.
