on my computer, i get pop-ups while i am playing aom. It is really annoying, since it minimizes my game. This seriously inhibits my micro.

Does anyone know how to get rid of popups while you aren't in internet explorer and using other programs???

NOTE to mods, please dont move this thread, as people acuallty check this forum.

Why are you surfing the internet when you should be concentrating on the game? You wouldn't get pop-ups if you had a decent pop-up blocker...

Hi everyone!

My AOM usernames are: chronomarle and magusfrog
Chrono Trigger FTW!
I DON'T have Titans BTW, but might be getting it sometime.

I have the same problem with AoE III. McAfee does that.

Sounds like spyware to me - install Adaware 2007

Scan your computer for spyware, then switch to Firefox.

Correct me if I'm wrong, (and I'm sure DaP will) but I believe something must be causing these pop-ups. Like a program or something.
Find the program, delete it.

I don't know what is wrong. I never have popups randomly while playing a game.

Read the title and thought "Don't have other programs running." Apparently that's not the case.

Switch to firefox though, it's better than IE. See if it helps.

Basically that is correct. It might also be the Windows "Message Service", which is disabled by default since Windows XP because it was more abused for ads than used properly. However, if you have enabled it, or are running Win2000, then that may be the culprit. Disabling the Windows Message Service is safe. This service was designed for administrators to be able to send popup messages to their users. It is useless in home environments.

Chances are the popups also originate from some kind of chatting software that you leave running in the background. It sure would be helpful if you explained in further detail what these popups look like and what text they contain. Most awesome would be a screenshot, of course.

If you are talking about the McAfee Security Center, you better go for a better virus scanner such as F-Secure. McAfee has a rather insecure and commercial-overloaded system anyway. That being said, I reckon there should be an option in your security center that allows for disabling all popups.

If you are talking about the standard Windows security center, you can

  • either take care of the cause of these popups. They are self-explanatory and pop up for a reason.

  • decide that you want your computer to remain in its current state although your security center considers it insecure. In this case, click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Security Center in order to open the security center. The last item on the left (!) pane is "alter the warning settings of security center". There you can disable the popups.

I do not believe that switching to Firefox will help you with that particular problem, but still Firefox is both much better and far more secure. So click here:

I'm afraid that both of these are debatable, but I can't be bothered to add to the huge amounts of data on the internet regarding both browsers. Facts and figures can be shaped to show absolutely anything - and the fact that most of the "leet" world hates Microsoft doesn't help in disproving the accusations of bias. :P

Having said that, I have both FF2 and IE7 installed, but I find myself using IE7 more.

There's a second firefox? When did that come out?
    posted 13 August 2007 10:13 AM EDT (US)     20 / 49
It is simply an increase in version number and replaces the older Firefox versions (like IE7 replacing IE6). If you download Firefox today, you will find yourself downloading Firefox 2.0.0.6 ("Firefox 2"). Older versions were 1.0.x and 1.5.x, but in order to download one of these, you would have to navigate through historical versions. Support for Firefox 1.x.x has also ended in spring 2007.

For practical purposes it is safe to assume that Firefox = Firefox 2. Although of course there were new capabilities added with Firefox 2.

That = malware on your PC. Install Adaware 2007, and do a full scan. Then do a full virus scan. Then see if carries on happening.

    Correct.

Also, I don't know if anyone's mentioned switching to Firefox in this thread. But it's a fact that it's better and safer than IE. And will give you a better GPA too.
