If you place 2000 stones on the map, you've exceeded the sprite limit. Any stones after than will become invisible and make the land under them freeze. You are not able to to anything with this land but raise it's height.

I described a way to set out blocks of stone in an ordered way so as to avoid damaging the terrain after laying the 2000th stone in an uncontrolled way. Click here to read that thread.
