~ ENDGAME - BLU TEAM (TOWN) WINS! ~


Email the host with day/night actions or any questions!


The timer began counting down. BLU had sixty seconds to prepare for an assault on the Gorge. Tempers were frayed, experts were nervous and noobs were crying. Everyone gathered their weapons and hats. A shadowed figure in a rather fetching pirate hat led the line. "Stop your whinging, maggots! Your death will help the cause."

"Three...two...one..." The gates opened. A few BLU team members ran out, guns blazing. Others cautiously followed, checking for enemy snipers and sentries. After a few seconds, everyone started to realise that there were no RED players in sight. A few impatient players felt the need to take advantage so they ran towards the first control point. After taking it uncontested, it became obvious that something was wrong - this was too easy. As BLU team entered the building to get to the second control point, the doors behind them suddenly slammed shut and the lights dimmed. Unbeknownst to them, a server glitch had dramatically unbalanced the teams, forcing the severely outnumbered (but night-vision-goggle-toting) RED team to resort to unconventional tactics. They hoped that if the BLU team could not easily see who was friend and who was foe, they might have a chance.


Game Structure:

After my previous Scientology Mafia, which was loosely-themed traditional game with a twist or two, Team Fortress 2 Mafia will be more experimental. 16 players will be given themed roles and an example role email will be posted to prevent the town gaining an unfair advantage by comparing role emails (even via paraphrasing). The roles given out can be traditional or unique.

Also be aware that I expect people who sign up to this mafia to be committed to playing the game. Obviously those with a good reason to stop playing can be replaced but I do not expect to have to replace players who are inactive. If a player appears to be going inactive, they will be prodded. If there is not a swift response to that prod, they will be replaced. If a replacement cannot be found quickly, they will be modkilled instead.

All of my posts will be formatted to look correct in the latest version of Firefox. They may not be formatted as intended in other browsers.

Rules and Game Info:

  • Roles will be distributed entirely randomly, using an automated list randomiser.
  • The host may refuse to allow any player it participate in the game for a number of reasons (e.g. those who have been inactive in previous games, those who have demonstrated a lack of understanding of the game, those who complain about "vanilla" roles or hosting methods, etc.).
  • The game will start on Day One.
  • Each day phase will continue until a single player has the majority (greater than half) of votes on them, which will result in that player being lynched. For example, if 10 players remain, 6 votes on a single player will result in that player being lynched (even if one or more voters changes their mind after these votes have accumulated). If activity dwindles during the day a deadline might be imposed at the host's discretion. If activity does not return to an acceptable level or a majority vote is not reached within the set deadline, no-one will be lynched that day and the night phase will commence.
  • Each night phase will last 48 hours. If you do not email your night actions to the host within the designated night period then you may be granted leniency but this is at the host's discretion. You are strongly advised to decide and perform night actions on time.
  • To vote a player to be lynched, you must bold your choice. An example of the formatting you can use is shown below:
    Vote: Forummer X.

  • In order to change your vote, you must unvote your original choice first. It greatly helps the host if you specifiy who you are unvoting. The following is an example of an acceptable change of vote:
    Unvote: Forummer X.
    Vote: Forummer Y.

  • You cannot vote for yourself.
  • If you wish to not lynch anyone on the current day, simply vote for "No Lynch". Votes for "No Lynch" work in the same way as votes against any other player.
  • The game ends when every team is dead, incapacitated or has fulfilled their win condition. The town's win condition is to eliminate all threats to them.
  • If you die, you're dead. If a dead player posts in this thread in order to wish their team good luck then no action will be taken but if the host decides that any information has been revealed in the post, that player's team will be punished at the host's discretion. Please be sensible and courteous to those still involved in the game.
  • Don't talk about this game outside of this thread unless your role email specifies permission to do so.
  • Unless otherwise indicated in your role email, abilities cannot be targetted on yourself.
  • Don't post in this thread during the night phase or you will be modkilled. The thread will be locked to prevent accidental night posting.
  • Don't quote any email correspondance between you and the host, including your role email. You may paraphrase but if you are unsure about what you can say and what you cannot, contact the host first.
  • Don't edit your posts. If you do, your punishment is at the discretion of the host depending on the nature of the edit but it will usually result in a modkill. Do not complain if you edit a post and get modkilled.
  • If you are going to be away from the game for an extended period of time (for example, going on holiday for a week or longer), tell the host in advance so that they can replace you if necessary.
  • If you simply stop posting and become inactive, you will be prodded. If your activity does not pick up or you do not reply to the prod, you will be replaced if possible. If a replacement cannot be found quickly, you will be modkilled. If you sign up to play this game, you are expected to play.
  • If you have a question about the game, you should email the host. Using the thread to ask questions is not advised. The host will make information, including answers to queries, public if they feel it is necessary.
  • It is not the host's fault if you fail to read and/or follow the rules.

    WIN CONDITION: BLU team wins when all threats to BLU team have been eliminated.

    ABILITIES (active):
    - Rampage: You can burn three players to death during the night. Using this ability will also cause you to die. This ability can only be used once.

    POWERS (passive):
    - None

    The lights were out, the room was sealed and everyone started screaming like girls whilst running around confused. Before it turned into a Carry On film, a couple of the calmer, more experienced players urged calm amid the chaos. After a heated discussion, it was decided to implement a logical approach to find out who and where the RED players were. And so, the game began.

    It is now DAY ONE.
    There are 16 players alive, so 9 votes are required for a lynch.

    Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand.
    I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me.
    Take me out to the black, tell them I ain't comin' back.
    Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.
    There's no place I can be, since I found Serenity.

    Alright, so, how do we want to proceed. I for one am pro-day starts, so I think we should proceed as normal. But I know some other people are anti-day start, so I'll wait to hear from more people before kicking off with a random vote.

    Well, it's possible that we have repeats, or different builds. I mean, a Charge Demo isn't necessarily the same as a regular Demo, a Mini-Turret Engineer is different from a regular Engineer, etc.

    So aside from the cheevies, we're pretty much at a loss here. I don't think speculating on setup is a particularly good way to go about this (it can only give the scum fake-claim ideas). For that reason, I'm a little suspicious of Thymole. Also, be careful your desire for achievements doesn't affect your playing. I realized that I was about to vote Thymole, merely because it might get me one.

    Possibly. But it also gives us a method of finding scum. For instance, if it turns out that there are only 9 roles and that there are multiple copies, we can rest assured that there are no more than 3 of each. Thus when one person name claims we can request that all others of the same name step forward (keeping in mind we should probably stay quiet when it comes to medics, spies, snipers, and scouts as to avoid giving away the doc and cop) and help us greatly with the counterclaiming process.

    I think that anyone who has a specified role should claim. Not role claim or even name claim, but just say that they're not a generic name so we can know that this game has some validity.

    Generic name = Medic, Heavy, Demo Man, Scout, Sniper, Pyro, Soldier, Engineer, or Spy

    Non Generic name = Charge n' Targe Demo Man (a specific type of Demo Man), Saxton Hale, or any other character with a name

    I suspect it will not because my own role is just one of the character classes.

    Claiming generic/specific is a bad idea, since specific roles are likely to be power roles.

    The OP makes it pretty clear that Blue is town and Red is scum.

    Als, I don't like the idea of others with the same role having to claim just because someone else did, unless their roles don't match up. And even then, we might not all have the same roles. Even if item-builds aren't denoted in the name, various items do various things. We should at the very least wait for confirmation that roles are copies.

    After the first person claims, if someone has a different role but same character, they should speak up. And after the second person claims as well. If after both claims, someone speaks up, roles are likely varied and we needn't have everyone claiming. If no one speaks up, roles are likely copies, so people should only claim in the wake of a claim if they have a different role.

    This being said I also agree. However, I doubt that a mafia player wouldn't know this because it would probably clearly spell out in their role email who the town is.
    Anyway, what is the game structure here? Blu vs Red? As simple as that?

    Ahbass doesn't seem to know this, I took this as someone try to subtly fish around for information. Perhaps he's a third party? I don't know Team fortress very well, I had it on my old computer and have not bothered to reinstall it. Do third party roles fit? As far as I played it was this team vs team warfare?(I played one round before going back to L4D2)

    And big props to DragonQ for the achievements. I think that's the best way of keeping activity up that has been devised.

    Unless there's a lurker chieve, but hey. If I remember correctly from the game at SpH (pbui), the enemies were spies. This could surely be the case again I think.

    Anyways, I would have thought that just from reading the OP, you would know who is town, which is why I thought it strange that Abhaas would ask what the town is. Plus, role emails (at least for the town) would confirm without a doubt who the town is.

    See, as I see from the wiki entry for the game, there are two gangs, Blu and Red, of around what, 8-9 types of player each?

    So teams of 8 vs 8, and those on Blu lynch those on red, and vice versa?
    How do you even achieve lynch majority in this case?

    Because, if you read the original post, you'd see that there are far fewer red players, and those players know who is on which team.

    If only the role in the OP was real.

    Anyways, other than Abhaas's failure to read, he hasn't done anything ridiculously scummy.

    To me, it does seem possible that there's some kind of third party. Could someone with a lot of knowledge of the game say more about that? i.e., could it be something other than the "observer" theory?

    Something I'm interested in is the "manner" category. Does it really tell us much at all?

    See, if you thought that there were even teams (which is what it sounded like), then there wouldn't be a town/mafia. There would just be 2 competing sides. If you had a BLU role email, you would know that BLU is town. Heck, if you even read the OP and the sample role email, you would know this, so I find it awfully strange that you apparently do not. In order for me to believe you are town (BLU) and that question was genuine ignorance, I have to accept that A) you didn't read the OP and sample email and B) you didn't read your own alignment. I find that hard to swallow from a player who has played as much as you. So, I don't trust you.

    @Pulse - When I asked DragonQ, he said it's just more descriptive stuff about your character.

    @Pulse when you join a tf2 game the only teams are Blu Red and Spectator

    I can't think of any kind of third party other than spectators unless some server glitch caused a spy to go rogue or something

    For how competing groups would work take a look at Battlefield 2 mafia.

    Personally I did think initially that this would be something similar but with only two groups that doesn't really seem viable.

    If we're looking at just the standard roles a mass claim might work pretty well.

    BLU team wins when all threats to BLU team have been eliminated.
    This means that all opponents of Blu team should be dead. This includes both the scenario-
    1) where Red is a complete different faction altogether
    2) where Red is reduced group.

    Within gameplay, a third party doesn't make sense, but in canon, the announcer lady is frequently shown to be playing both sides against each other. She could be a possible third party.
