Since the Designers board isn't being updated anymore, I decided to make an own thread to keep people updated on the progress of my upcoming Campaign about Nubia, or Kush, whatever you like to call it. I think all people who are actively designing might start an own thread as well, as I don't think we're risking to have the forum overflowed with them.

SCENARIO I:
Origin
Status: Done

This Scenario depicts the birth of the Nubian Civilization, it takes place between the years 8000-3000 BC, and focuses on not getting killed by wild animals and paying tribute to the Mountain Priests. It requires the player to manage his economy properly, but is largely free, and encourages the player to explore a fair bit. It's controlled by a timer so there is still some pressure.

The stones at Nabta, which predate Stonehenge by about 1000 years, is one of the worlds oldest astronomically aligned sites, and an objective in this scenario

The latest addition to this scenario was a collective of Mountain Priests, which will ask tribute periodically. This adds a bit more pressure, as it requires the player to find the Market within the first 10 minutes, and keep a steady flow of gold. Also it adds the opportunity for a fun challenge, where you have to complete the map without doing so, and destroy the priests temple.

SCENARIO II:
Rulers of the Curved Land
Status: Minor Balancing left

This Scenario is set sometime between 1600 and 1500 BC, as it includes the Nubian attack on Elkab during Egypts 17th Dynasty.

The player has an ally in the kingdom of Punt (teal), which makes the scenario slightly easier

The Gameplay idea for this scenario changed a lot during development. It started out as a pretty standard B&D supremacy scenario, with an interesting limitation as the player could advance to the Bronze Age, but the only available units from that age would be Broad Swordsmen and Priests, while keeping all Tool Age units available. Later I got the idea of changing it, so that the player would control a small group of Bronze age units, while fighting respawning hordes of weak Tool Age units. However this idea went really bad, as I changed the players colour to player 8, and this messed up all the civilization settings. I then changed it to be more of a DM style scenario, but keeping the original unit restrictions.

What is still needed to be done is some eye-candy as parts of the scenario are kind of bland. Also it needs some serious balancing, to keep the Computer players from destroying each other.

SCENARIO III:
Dynasty of the Black Pharaohs
Status: Like, half done?

It will be a Diplomatic scenario, in which the player must Conquer Egypt from the Egyptians, rebuild Egypt to it's former Glory, and at last Defend it from the Assyrians. (They will have Stone Throwers!) This will probably be the greatest scenario of the Campaign. I can't give too much information as a lot of things will be implemented and cut out during the development process, but ideas include Greek Mercenaries, which can be tributed instead of being fought, having Egypt Ally you as you conquer the capital, having to raze decadent buildings only to replace them with your own, and fighting the Assyrian invasion. (Which is awesome) The scenario should have some pretty impressive dynamics to support some very innovative gameplay.

SCENARIO IV:

The Warring Queen
Status: Planned

It is a puzzle scenario with a cat (Tame Lion), a Queen (some ranged hero) and some royal gold (War Chest). The Roman Army has been advancing South, but the Queen is stuck in Thebes, which is already occupied. With the help of her faithful Mau she must escape and return to Napata to lead her army against the Romans. Deni-historically accurate.

The scenario follows the same formula as the 5:th scenario in Triumph and Tragedy of the Etruscans, ruler must escape occupied city, find army, and return to take over the city. (What can I say, it's a successful formula. Never gets old, really.) I think the puzzling factor included is good enough to make this a unique experience though.

SCENARIO V:
(No title yet, I'm thinking of making it something ridiculous though.)
Status: Planned
The fifth scenario depicts the decline of Nubia, and the rise of Christianity in Africa. You control a city (or base/whatever) which has allied with the Christian kingdom of Aksum. You must help spread Christianity to Nubia, and convince the king of Meroe to renounce his old faith. A conversion themed B&D scenario with limited resources, including a slight puzzle.

Questions:

Is there anything I need help with?
Right now I'll be looking for a playtester, as scenarios 2 and three are some of the heaviest to balance.

When am I expecting to finish this?
Okay, I seriously think there's a decent chance that the end of summer 2015 is going to work as a preliminary release date. But after all this time, why do you even trust anything I'm saying?

I said I would let it go if it takes more than 6 years, and I'm seriously worried that more than half of this time has passed now, and I'm like less than half done. I'm sorry if you're actually waiting for this thing, but it is still probably going to happen.

More information will follow.

Good to see there are still great campaigns in the making. I already did some work on a concept for campaigns for the age of italy mod. I will make a thread for that later, first I'm going to take a look at the feedback for my mod. Good luck with your campaign.

What is up with the color in the screenshots? All the darker areas seem to be lighter (this would be a lovely effect to have in-game btw).
I changed the players colour to player 8, and this messed up all the civilization settings.
I'm pretty sure each civ setting is moved to the next civ when you change the players color, e.g. (cpu) player 2 settings are actually player 3 settings and so on. Civ names get messed up this way too.

It's been a while since I've seen someone designing a major campaign and announcing it here. I hope it works out the way you want to, Frukty

Since the age of italy mod will take quite a bit of time before people can design scenario's with it, you should be able to get quite far with this campaign before starting the persian campaign.

Nice job as far as i can tell, Fruitfish. i can0t wait to d/l it and play it...as long as it isn't as tough as the second scenario of your estruscan campaing, hehe. Anyways I was about to say stuff looks too green and forested, however in the past sudan was greener, and i suppose it would still look like that in the rainy season, if it wasn't for the desertification.

Yes, during the setting of the first Scenario Sudan Would be a lot more Rain-Forest-like. The Second scenario Is attempting to show the Desertification, by turning the map more Savannah-like, the lush forests you see in the screenshots there are located close to the Nile, forests in other places look more like the one to the right in the third screenshot.

Frukt,

You should publish an scenario for multiplayer considering this is good for campaign players also for multiplayer players.

Are you asking me to make a MP version of one of the scenarios from this campaign, or just to spawn another MP map in general?

If you meant the second one I have already done that, although the scenario was not the most interesting thing I've made. I might create another one some day, but if so it'll be far into the future.

If you meant the first one, that is a lot more complicated than it may sound like, as I make the scenarios I often have a very simplistic idea for a Single Player scenario, then I improve a lot on that idea while designing until a scenario takes form, and when making something which I want to be an interesting SP scenario, I'll put in a lot of things which may not have the desired effect if one of the enemy players is another human, as humans are often very unpredictable.

The only scenario in this campaign which might make a good MP experience is number 2, and even then it would be a lot of work to modify it.

Another thing which discourages me from making MP maps is AoEs lack of a file sharing system. (StarCraft seriously beat us to that.) If I make a new Multiplayer scenario it won't be for more than 2 players I think.

With good reason, since except for you and Fruktfisk (oh yeah dubstepfisk, have to get used to that one) not many forummers speak swedish. I'm not going hold dutch discussions with Phatfish either, if I want that I'll talk to him on msn.

Haven't seen you posting as much as before Basse, busy?

Really though, when it's a short message like that it is really more a way of expressing that we have a common language, than holding a complete discussion in a foreign language to avoid the ears of moderators. So far I've never been warned about making a shorter message in Swedish, or suddenly speaking German in OD.

Translation: "I promise to play it when you're done."

Thank you Amphetamine, it's always nice when people drop in and leave a comment.

If anyone is wondering, little progress has been made so far, I've started work on some basic outlines for the third scenario, while I'm still working to finish the dynamic for the spawning of the Nubian Archers in the second scenario, which I can't quite decide how to do.

Yeah, I'm sorry about the swedish, I'm most often found at SWGBH and we have a really laid back attitude towards that over there.

Anyways, this is highly anticipated, looks great and the gameplay and the features you talk about made an old man (20 as of last sunday ) happy once again.

Considering this topic hasn't had any new posts in over a year, an update might be in place.

Progress has been minimal, but not nonexistent. I can tell you that the second scenario by now would qualify as done, although some minor tweaks will likely be made in the future. I've also started working a bit on the third scenario, basically all I've done is mark the basic positions and the Nile river. I also had an idea of a name for the second scenario, but then I forgot it.

Patience is a virtue.

Why would you take the time to read this signature? Chances are that there are many other posts below mine.

Yeah, so clearly we've passed the preliminary release date of summer 2013 by now. (I could just spit out a new one right now, but there's really no reason to take those things seriously right now.) Since the project ran into problem with designing the third scenario I kind of lost interest for a while, but it's not canceled. To prove it I will post a badly merged screenshot from the third scenarios Nile:

The map design is kind of coming along in the southern portion of the map, while the scenario is still not in a playable state.

As the title post has been saying for the last three years, I'll wrap it up by next summer.

Seriously though, since the third scenario keeps running into technical difficulties (right now, computer players are not researching the proper techs for no apparent reason at all) development has been going really sluggish. If I manage to solve these problems, development could go through a surge at any time. However, since I'm back at school now, with all that brings, still wouldn't have that much time for designing, so next summer would probably be the closest realizable date of completion.

If anybody has been running into the whole "computer players don't upgrade properly" mess before I'd really appreciate some help. I could send you the scenarios and relevant files if you like as well. I don't believe it's a fault in the AI files themselves, as computer players fail to research techs such as Sc. Mail for Cav, while they fulfill the requirements to do so.

Try opening the ai files with Ai Edit (use File - Open from the program, drag and drop doesn't work). If they fail to open, then it's most likely a syntax error. I run into a lot of similar bugs when debugging the original ai files (so if you used such as base, it might be the problem). If you post the ai files, I can take a look too.

AI Edit is already my default editing program. I'll try to drop the files in this thread soon, although I don't think the problem is in the AI files themselves.
