Game 4 ; 6 player basic ***dwarves, day 53***

1 - GOBLINS - IVeron - dedna AT comcast DOT net eliminated by dwarves, day 30(ish)
2 - ELVES - Sapphoenix (elves?) - sapphoenix(at)gmail(dot)com - killed by indies, day 7
3 - FROSTLINGS - blackcat (blackcat AT email DOT de) eliminated by dracos, day 36(ish)
4 - ORCS - Rheno - pjvw AT live DOT nl albinscott (sub, day 3) albinscott at gmail dot com - defeated day 10 by indies
5 - DRACOS - Lord Duck - GMT +1 - lordduckk at gmail dot com eliminated by dwarves, day 53
6 - DWARVES - NaecO -nguyen dot huyhai at gmail dot com - GMT +1 subbed by greenmonster 04at g mail dot com on turn 15

*************************
Dwarf, Draco (53), Frostling (36ish), Goblins (30ish), Orcs (10), Elves (7)

with the elves and orcs dead so early, the frostlings had easy, uncontested expansion, and became the game's powerhouse. Dwarves and dracos teamed up against them and goblins. Goblins fell to an ambush. Dracos had many hidden units take frostling holdings, then ambushed the frostlings. A gold dragon turned into an area guard and wiped out a huge portion of the draco army, giving the dwarves the upper hand. Game was played out until the end... the draco maneuverability and hiding skills were not enough to overcome the dwarf gold income/unit production and superior numbers. Dwarves had limited mobility, but having 2 wizard towers and 'freeze water' helped them overcome their limitations.

***IMPORTANT***

there is a small movie file used in this map (from AoW2), which you can download from
HERE if you do not have AoW2. This file should be placed into the AoW:SM "movies" folder. It is not essential to do this, but you may experience a 15 second black screen where you can do nothing. The game is NOT locking up, and nothing bad is happening to your computer. The game is just trying to locate or play a file that isn't there. Everything is back to normal after 15 seconds or so.

This will be a more common problem for the 6p version.
I've played 5 games until at least turn 40. (on the 4p version - 1 game until turn 35 on the 6p version)

  • in 4 of the games, at least 1 wizard (different each time) was eliminated by day 15 or so, almost always due to independants.

  • in each game, wizards would take turns dominating the map, but none could hold domination for long

  • there will be alot of turns where you do very little; if the turns keep moving, its no problem. Just keep in mind that it is an empire building game.

  • there is alot of suspense in the turns. things really pick up around day 30. Most likely there will be some major conflicts around this time, and then another period of rebuilding armies.

  • SCOUT! You are playing blind, and you have no wizard tower. While you should be safe on your first couple turns, all bets are off after day 3. Keep your wizard well protected.

  • While I playtest very thouroughly, what I can not predict is what effects diplomacy will have. The map was designed keeping in mind the request 'players should roleplay the races like the races/alignment really would'. There are no 'artificial rules' I'm imposing though, so enjoy whatever chaos ensues!

  • There is alot of randomness to increase replayability and unpredictability. Depending on how the 'dice land', you may find yourself very powerful early on, or under considerable duress.

  • If you play smart, you can overcome your limited and quickly dwindling resources WITHOUT having to disband troops. In fact, if you do disband troops, you may find that you get 'stuck' without enough troops to help you claim resources. Or worse, you may find your enemies are really close, and you won't be able to fend them off.

  • Its a SMALL map. That means its very dangerous. Play cautious, or gamble big - that's up to you, BUT, if you do gamble, be prepared to go down in flames. On the other hand, a well-timed gamble when another wizard has their guard down could pay off HUGE.

  • I'm confident enough in the map's balance that I can recommend it for wizard ladder games. If all players agree right away about making it a ladder game, go ahead and register them.

  • lastly, there is a GAME bug I found which pops up semi-often on this map due to unique scripting. It may cause too many units to occupy the same hex, and when it does, you will not be able to move anyone. IT IS NOT A GAME BREAKER, and is an easy fix. Simply save your game, exit out, and reload where you left off. The units will still occupy the same same hex, but you will be able to move them now. It does not cause a restart.

Nimbus the Gray, Day 1

I woke up one day & found myself aboard an exotic but weird looking elven ship. There were two escorts of bodyguards in similar ships sailing close to mine. Slowly, as the youngest royal family member, I remembered I was sent to discover a new land suitable for elves habitation. Everywhere I looked, I see ice & snow for days.

Ancrock Anblock - day 1

"Damn this cold. I can't feel my legs anymore, and that includes my third leg! We are not prepared for this warchief - We are not undead like you are! Why did we come here. What is it we seek here my lord"

"I told you this before, you little grunt! It was through a vision that we travelled here. Never before have I had a dream like this. The spirits in it ordered me to travel here. We must search for a golden Ring, an artefact of great value and power. Now you little maggots, get to work. Sack the tows! Pillage! Rape! kill! Do as you wish but make sure to question everybody about the artefact we seek."

I'd suggest Lord Duck replay his turn. Otherwise, it would make the game unbalance.

I think a replay could be a good thing, especially since its a beta game (and noone has mentioned registering it as a ladder game), BUT its completely up to all of you.

I do suggest that someone send out an email to all players involved and take a vote, b4 things get confusing though.

naecO is having problems getting the turn to open - although it opened up fine for me.

I'm guessing that it might be a driver problem.

looking for a solution.

Last I heard, naecO got the turn working. I'm not sure if it was finished and sent on though.

Nimbus the Gray, Day 2

The gale was strong & the sea calm! Our elven galleys crashed through the waves with ease. Nimbus was happy that the sailing was less turbulent than previous days, leaving her nauseous with a bad mood. A quarter of the ocean was mapped out & she located a point to dock to build a new homeland for her kind. With all preparations ready, we shall set to work the next morrow!

I'm interested, if you really want to go with the substitution process - I'd advise waiting a little bit longer, but who am I, really?

Will have no probs giving back my position to Rheno, later.

Ancrock Anblock - day 3

Greetings, fellow Ring searchers, thank you for allowing me in your restrict circle.
We already made contact with Nimbus the Grey, we'll see what kind of diplomacy will develop from there.
We also took a mine and are about to rebuild a structure. An Ice Dragon, acting as area guard, emerged from an underground gateway close to our capitol (or was he always there?). We'll pay attention to its behavior in the near future.

ts

greenmonster, would you mind changing the turn order list and replace Rheno, please?

Nimbus the Gray, Day 4

We decided to wait awhile & observe the Ancrock Anblock since we are only a young explorer landing on a foreign land. Everything appeared mesmerising & dangerous to us at the same time. Moreover, the offer of an item from this unfathomable undead leader as a gesture of goodwill was really generous. We shall see what develops from here.

Meanwhile, we quickly subdued a vampire guarding an abandoned gold mine & began our excavation. Gold is in such short supply at the beginning!

An outpost is rebuilt and an Ice Dragon defeated! What a glorious day! Further, we spotted a Frostling force that has just disembarked in our vicinities... Beware, invaders!

ts

greenmonster, I had a black screen when I went underground near my first city, after defeating 2 indy Frost Witches that were placed in the gateway. After a few minutes I minimized the game window and then restored it back, and things went back to normal. Since this never happened to me before, I felt I had to report it to you. It's not serious and it even may have nothing to do with the map itself, but if you want to, I can send you the file.

I read the warning earlier. I decided not to copy the file, as I understood from your text it was not absolutely necessary.
And my screen was still black after 10 minutes or more, since I decided to try the 15 seconds thing.
But if you think the explanation resides in the absence of the movie file, than there's no problem
posted 08-22-08 08:56 PM EDT (US)     23 / 114
maybe it just took your computer longer to look for the file then mine did? *shrugs*

anyway, if it was your first trip underground, then I'm 99.9% sure the missing movie file is the culprit.

Could be. I'm playing in a 2 years old cheap AMD CELERON cpu with 512 MB, that takes forever loading my SP Athendore II game

And now you've just sparked my curiosity: I'll get the movie so I don't miss a thing!

I encountered a problem just like the beginning of the game. This time it was when I click End Turn. The game crashed and sent me to the desktop screen. I reloaded the game and it crashed before I can get to the password prompting screen. So I had to download the game again from the mailbox and retried. It worked again but there will be a restart message.

Sorry for that but there's nothing I can do and I'm sure the problem come from the map as every other maps I'm playing load just fine. So I guess Greenmonster will have to keep the Beta label for this map longer than he planned

Nimbus the Gray, Day 5

We made an unholy pact with the undead leader, seeing we had little choice in the new world. Our forward scouts continued to scan the map for interesting locations & encounters. We have already located three other wizards, the last two shall not evade our all-compassing scouts. Though we wondered why are dwarves venturing on the open snow where they should be tunneling underground?

I would ask everyone to post at least a simple "TS" here when they finish their turns: not only this allows the thread to move up and stay in sight of everyone, but, more importantly, allows those who try to get things moving by sending reminder e-mails to know where the game has stalled exactly IF that is the case.
Thanks everyone.
