Top Prize is a $30 gift certificate to Amazon.com (so you can buy Shadow Magic for a friend). Runner up prize is an email offering my condolances that you didn't win the top prize.

To play you will need Age of Wonders SM updated with the 1.3 patch, be registered on the Wizard's Ladder and be willing to play in three games simultaneously. Since they are four player games, it should average about a turn per player per day. All games will be registered on the Wizard's Ladder as FFA games. Positions on the maps will be assigned randomly, and players will be put into games so as to have the most diversity of opponents possible.

All players will play one game each of the following in the first round:

Forest of Legends (Modified to remove Anarchist and War Mage from Skulkan)
Goldrush Mountains (As is)
Pirahna Bay (Corrected to assign spheres and skills to all wizards)

These maps are all reasonable well balanced, though nothing is perfect, and everyone will be expected to make the best of the situation as they find it.

To determine who plays in the final game players will recieve credits as follows:

6 credits for each 1st place
4 credits for each 2nd place
2 credits for each 3rd place
3 credits for each other wizard eliminated (see FFA rules)
If a players is eliminated by independants, all other players still in the game get one credit.

(Yes this does mean you can gain more credits coming in second than coming in first if you are doing most of the work.)

After the first round the best 10 credit totals will play two simultaneous 5 player games to qualify for the final round. (We'll be using "Through Rage and Wisdom" and "Five Alive SM"). The credit totals will start over at zero, with 8 points for 1st, 6 points for 2nd, 4 points for 3rd, 2 points for fourth, and 3 points for each wizard eliminated.

The players with the four highest credit totals in the semi-final round will then compete in a final map, chosing which position they want in the order of their credit total. The final map will probably be "A River Ran Through It" which is amorphously balanced at best, so it pays to do well in the second round. (In the case of a tie the scores from first round will be used as the tie-breaker. Only if both groups are tied will we use a larger map.) There will be no "credits" for the final game, the last person alive will be the contest winner.

With 96% of the first round games completed the standings are as follows

42 - JWorth
39 - Evil Roc

All game assignments were made randomly, and arranged so there is as much variety as possible. On the list of things I will not be entertaining complaints about will be:

1) Map balance. I selected the maps as best I could, and if you have a more difficult position, you should consider it a challenge.

2) Game assignment. You're stuck with the group that came up I'm afraid, it was ugly enough to arrange as it was, I won't be able to swap people around for any reason.

We'll be playing with the standard house rules for PBEM games, but with none of the optional rules.

Also be aware that free for all doesn't mean that alliances are not allowed. Frequently alliances will form. But the game isn't over until there's only one wizard left standing, so eventually, you'll have to either stab your ally in the back, or be stabed yourself.

Just to note...the map names - Piranha Bay and Goldrush Mountains have been interchanged.

Call hero has been 'fixed', btw.
It no longer calls independent heroes from the map.

Thundar - sorry about that. Cut and paste error. I've corrected it.

Hiranu - are you setting up all the games, or is it for the first player in each 'block' to initiate? If its the latter do we assume the games are already registered for the Wizards Ladder?

As a warning - I believe that I face Kirk twice. Don't care if you don't, but wanted to make you aware before we started.

SteveB - I'll be generating the games

Monty - Yup, you are right. I'm afraid I still don't have it perfect. I'm gonna rerun it.

Edit: I've rerun it at this point, and I'm pretty sure I got it right this time.

Stupid question - should we post turn logs (in the PBEM forum, I guess)? I realize the need to keep secrets from each other, but a simple "turn sent" is nice to help keep track of where the turn is.

Mr. FrumpkinsTM -

I'm not flaky!

posted 03-22-04 05:18 PM EDT (US)     13 / 111
In fact, there will be turn logs for every game. Being Wizard's Ladder games with more than two players there is a requirement to log turns, it will help to make sure the game keeps moving.

You've got Goldrush Mountains and Pirahna Bay mixed up again .
posted 03-22-04 07:53 PM EDT (US)     15 / 111
Ok, I've corrected the game names above, and corrected a couple of email addresses. I've started the threads for the individual games, and I've sent out the turns to all of the games (except those with Kirk, who I'm still trying to track down.)

Remember to log your turns everyone, so we keep the turns moving.

Just to show that I'm a total newbie to AOW:SM PBEM (but I learn quickly )... is surrender set to "off" for all of the games? I don't see anything in the threads, and I'm not sure what the consensus default setting is.
posted 03-23-04 02:05 AM EDT (US)     17 / 111
I sure do hope so.
posted 03-23-04 06:53 AM EDT (US)     18 / 111
Nope. We're playing without optional house rules, which would include the tendancy to turn surrender off. Its as the developers wrote it for this one folks.

Hiranu

On behalf of us all, I want to thank you for the considerable time and effort you've put into organising and setting up the tourney; and that's without the inevitable delays as player go AWOL plus the later rounds!

Is that 10 'brown nose' credits for me?

posted 03-25-04 00:02 AM EDT (US)     20 / 111
I suggest that for the next round atleast, we turn surrender off. It is a very painful feature in WL games when every small battle counts...especially in maps like A River Ran Thru it where most of your initial fights are fought with low-level troops.

If you so wish, we could have a poll amongst the people who are playing the second round to determine whether we should have surrender off or not. Please consider it.

posted 03-25-04 09:36 AM EDT (US)     21 / 111
I'll take a poll when we get there, and let majority rule. I wasn't willing to do that for the full group (which is far too large) so I just went with my preference. But we can do that for semi-final and final rounds.

Thanks Hiranu.

Just been poking around in Piranha Bay a little bit, and I have a question -- is the initial event that gives the frostlings (but not the other positions) a gift of 1000 gold on turn 1 still active in the version we're playing?
posted 03-28-04 11:08 AM EDT (US)     24 / 111
It should be deactivated. Can any of the frostling players confirm this?
posted 03-28-04 01:20 PM EDT (US)     25 / 111
Are Piranha Bay maps still on hold? It's just that I've just received a turn ...
