Hey everybody and welcome to the HG Main Mafia Forum. This forum is specifically for mafia games and mafia related discussions (such as preferred gamesetups and the such). This mafia related discussions that aren't an actual game should be kept separate from game threads but by all means feel free to talk all you want as long as it pertains to mafia.

For those of you who have stumbled upon this forum and do not know what Mafia is but are interested, Wikipedia has some information on it that can be quite useful to you for getting started, and this thread has the majority of mafia terminology in it. This does not contain every possible piece of information that could help you, however, and the best way to learn how the game works is to watch a game or two, read a completed one or simply jump in and ask for help or clarification when needed. Everybody should be happy to clarify or explain something to you that is considered common knowledge in mafia circles, and please do ask. The better everybody gets, the more fun the games are.

For those of you who've been playing mafia across all the heavens, fear not, as mafia games in normal community forums are not being shut down. This is simply supplementary to the other heavens and a place where players will hopefully be more dedicated than across the heavens. As this is supposed to be a place with more dedicated players, there will be at least one rule in addition to the normal rules of mafia. This is that if anybody goes overly inactive and/or requires a replacement for a game without some sort of unavoidable reason (forgetting to check the forums is not a valid reason) and no warning, they will not be able to play the next game. This is not meant to be a punishment so much as it is meant to simply prevent the plague of inactivity that can so harm games played in community forums.

Lastly, moderation of this forum is expected to be a simple task. The sole purpose of this forum is to have fun playing a common forum game. If anybody is violating the CoC and it is a game that EnemyOfJupitor or myself are not playing in, please email me with the post number and the name of the thread. It can be assumed that EoJ and myself are skimming every thread, but with the sheer volume of posts it is possible to miss ad hominem. In this respect, we are hoping for you, the community at large, to help in moderation.

So, where do we sign up?

Edit: Ah, rot will post the Calendar...

Question, however: Would 14 qualify as a large or mini?

Usually a mini is considered to have less then 15 people so 14 would be a mini.

Now, just to outline something that might not be clear in the calendar itself, the way things are going to work is two at a time, per queue, so, as it stands, I'm going to make signups for Battlefield 2 Mafia (Sails and I agreed on this setup, since that way we both can edit stuff), and then EoJ can also post signups. Then, once BF2 signups are done, Blatant can post signups, and, once EoJ's is done, whoever else gets put on the mini queue can post signups.

Whoa! Seriously? Now all we need is PMing and we're straight!

Also, this is what I really am happy about. A community that wants a dedicated area as opposed to forum hopping which was incredibly annoying and that is why I didn't bother with mafias here lately and joined MafiaScum.

Well, before I start making new topics...

Are signup threads and mafia game threads only allowed or can we talk about anything that is strictly mafia related?
posted 05-06-09 09:58 AM CT (US)     12 / 79
Feel free to make any thread related to mafia. It does not have to be an actual game if you wish to discuss strategy or theory or something along those lines.

So sign-ups as well as games are supposed to be posted here in this forum?

Read: Games that don't take months to finish.

As stated earlier, it will also be a great place to see new styles of play, and different players.

The concept is pretty simple. There are two primary groups, an uninformed majority called the town and an informed minority called the mafia. The game is broken into two stages, night and day. During the night, the mafia kills someone. During the day, everyone votes to lynch someone (majority vote lynches). Because the town has majority over the mafia, the town controls the vote. However, each member of the town does not know who other members of the town are, while each member of the mafia knows who all other members of the mafia are. Thus, during the day, the mafia all pretend to be town and trick the town into lynching another town member, while the town overtly hunts for mafia. Once a person is lynched, it is night again.

To make the game a bit more interesting, there are two town members that have special abilities, that they use at night. One is the cop, who can investigate one person each night and learn whether they are town or mafia. The other is the doctor, who each night can choose to protect one person from killing (if the mafia and doctor choose the same person, the person doesn't die). These are called power roles (there are many many more, but in the simplest of games, there is just a cop and a doctor).

So, the game cycles through night and day until either the town or mafia is the only faction left standing. At night, night actions are sent to the host, and then during the day, players vote in the thread. The host declares deaths and reveals the identities of the dead.

Some simple rules: Mafia is a closed signups game, where players signup, and once a certain number is reached, the host gives out the roles, and then the game actually begins. Once players are in, new players cannot join except to replace players that no longer wish to play. Mafia is also a closed communication game. The mafia is allowed to communicate outside the game thread, but otherwise, it is frowned upon to communicate with players about the thread outside of the game (the reason here is because mafia members might try and trick players outside of the game, or townies might share info outside of the game). This also means that members that are not playing can't post inside of the thread. Players that have died in the game can no longer post or communicate with other players about the game. Players may not edit their posts and have to double post if they want to add something (the reason here is because the game is about reading someone's behavior, and if players can edit their posts at will, they can change what they said before, making it impossible to read them).

Also, is there a game already being played (or better yet, a completed game) so I can see how it works?

There are three games currently going, though most have only just started. A fourth game should be going into signups very soon (we're just waiting on the host to post it), and you should get a spot there (host has hinted at up to 30 spots).

As for completed games...we haven't finished any yet, but I'm sure I could find one or two that you could look over.

I took a look at 'any', I'm on the 6th page. Nothings happened so far but its an intresting read. Will keep me busy for a while.

I have some questions.

Do Mafia know who other Mafia are? As in the will never assasinate their own 'mate' when its night?

What are some examples of 'post restrictions'?

Do you get your 'Role' by mail? Does everyone get this including Mafia?

What's 'SK'?

The mafia are informed of each other, and are even allowed to communicate outside of the game thread.

A post restriction is simply a limitation on what or how you post. For example, a post restriction might entail you being unable to use vowels in your posts, or having to post over 100 words per post. They are usually there for flavor. In some cases, post restrictions are there for balance, though people usually try to weasel around them.

Here at HG, we don't have a PM system, so all players receive their role and any other relevant information via email.

SK is short for Serial Killer. A serial killer is a lone player who kills each night and wins when everyone else is dead.

You said, VERY clearly, I can make decisions based on my results. I asked you, does that mean voting for someone is allowed? You said, yes. Earlier, you had said that I am allowed to say someone is scummy if I find they are lying. These are exactly what I did.

When it comes to that last post, that was, of course, my idiocy. I accidentally posted my notes from my detects along with the rest of my post. Those should have, of course, been deleted before I clicked the submit button. But don't you DARE say that I was not allowed to vote someone or say they're scummy based on my results. Don't you DARE say that I was not allowed to reveal I was a lie detector, especially since I asked you if I could immediately after I got my role email.

Of course, even worse was the reason you modkilled me. Quoted from our convo that day:

(5:06 PM) Ashrzr: Edit the other parts too
Now
(5:06 PM) Ashrzr: Or you're dead
What does this mean, of course? That if I don't edit them out, I die. You specifically told me to edit them, or I will die.

So, what did I do? I edited my post, of course. And then what did YOU do? You modkilled me. What are the reasons you cited for modkilling me? Well, according to the convo we just had two minutes ago, for revealing information and editing my post. After you told me you were modkilling me, in that convo, I said:
(5:19 PM) Le Comte d'Arvedui: That's fine.
I played horribly anyway.
I was not mad about that. But modkilling me for editing my post when you TOLD me to? If someone reveals confidential info in one of my mafias and I ask them to edit it out immediately, I can still modkill them after they edit it out. However, I'm modkilling them for posting that info. I'm NOT modkilling them because they edited the post, especially since they edited the post on my orders. I mean, if I ask someone to edit their post and they do so and I modkill them, couldn't I take a player whom I don't like, ask them to edit their post, and then modkill them for fun? Of course, I'd never do that. You, I'm not sure, but I hope not.

The funniest part of all this, though, is that you said in the convo right before I decided to sign out that you want a one month probation for me on all of Rot's calendars until such time as I admit it was my fault I got modkilled and apologize. Evidently, I have admitted it was my fault numerous times, including that original convo and the convo we just had. As for apologizing? Quoted from our original convo:
(5:18 PM) Le Comte d'Arvedui: Thanks, Ashie.
And sorry
Now
(hug)
Of course, you ignored that altogether.

And besides, in my opinion, the first problem was even adding that role in a mafia in the first place. A day lie detector that can reveal himself and can make 10 lie detects and space them out however he wants, i.e. 10 in 1 day or one a day? And the only restriction is that I can't specifically say someone is lying? How is that NOT OP?

Best part is that you seem to think I'm being immature and deserve a probation for this.

No. I was perfectly fine with the modkill and I knew I deserved it for not deleting my notes before posting. However, I am blaming you in that you allowed me to do what I did, you never told me to stop even though you could have, and yet you are saying that I was not allowed to do what I did and broke the rules in that way.
I can't control your actions, I can't use powers and control your mind to post your results, you did it on your own, and now you're trying to blame me. No. Just no.
I never blamed you for me posting my results accidentally. I am angry at you for never telling me that I couldn't do what I was doing, only to "take it down a notch", and then saying I broke the rules and abused my role. I mean, my first hint was so subtle, no one caught on for three pages. Do you really think that's me blatantly revealing my results or being in the confines of my role, which were that I can reveal myself but not reveal my results directly?

...lol.

Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black, tell them I ain't comin' back.
Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.
There's no place I can be, since I found Serenity.
But you can't take the sky from me...

I just didn't want to lose his friendship, which I think is already lost now.
It's certainly getting there.

Hey, both of you! Don't make me get out a newspaper and hit you both on the nose with a newspaper. Its really quite simple what happened: Arvy broke a restriction he even told the whole game about having and then got modkilled for it. He did something he shouldn't have, got the adequate punishment and now everybody can move on? Pretty please, so I don't have to find newspaper and go through the trouble of hunting you guys down to smack you over the head?

*I'd just like to point out that I broke the restriction on accident and deserved the modkill, but everything before that was still completely legal, especially since I had run it by Ashrzr before I posted in the thread*

It was a simple loop hole. Ashrzr made a mistake in allowing you to state that you were a lie detector, and Arvy made a mistake in trying to quickly end the game and kill the fun in what he knew was sketchy, at best. Now, can we put this behind us?

Oh, and Nomadic, if you want, you can move your Zombie Mafia over to here. But make sure to link me to two games you participated in, since I'm not as familiar with you as with some of the others.
