The Editors Handbook

This is your complete guide to everything you will every need to know. If you are interested in starting with the editor then you have come to the right place. Terminology

Not much of this in editing.

Scn – Scenario
ES – Ensemble Studios
AoK – Age of Kings
TC – The Conquerors
Trig – Trigger
Loop – Looping (Trigger Setting)
WFS – Wild Fire Studios
Eye Candy – Things to make your map look pretty
RMS – random map scripts
MPS – Mod Pack Studios

Exploring AoK

The different folders that came with your AoK CD

age2_x1: The base folder for the game

AI: The folder for .AI and .Per files. See the AI section.

Avi: The folder for the movies that you can play in certain circumstances before and after a scenario.

Campaign: This folder contains all of the campaigns that came with your CD. If you download a file from the blacksmith that is .CPX or .CPN you should store it here

Media: This folder is in the “Campaign” folder. It contains all of the beginning and ending stories for the campaigns

History: This folder has all of the Texts in the history section. Try editing them.

Learn: This folder has the documents with all of the Usernames that are on your CD

Random: This file will hold all of your random map scripts.

SaveGame: Obviously, this folder contains all of your saved games.

Scenario: This is the place where you should put any .SCN files you download. Your saved maps are also found here.

Screenshots: Should you take a screenshot with the “print screen” key, it will be saved here

Sound: This folder contains the four sound subfolders

Campaign: This folder holds all of the campaign sounds

Scenario: This folder holds all of the scenario sounds

Stream: This folder holds all of the pre game sounds as well as other miscellaneous sounds

Terrain: This folder holds several nature sounds that are very useful

Taunt: This folder holds all of the in-game taunts

Scenariobkg: This document is the background for the start of a campaign. Edit the picture.

Fool around with these files to improve your scenario.

The Big Three: Eye candy and Trigger tricks

Forest: To make an excellent forest, simply follow these steps

-Lay down a large area of leaves
-Modify the elevation to suit your tastes
-lay down parts of other terrain
-Go to Units>Gaia>Other
-lay down appropriate trees, well spaced.
-Go through the Gaia menu and scatter appropriate objects

This can work with many kinds of terrain and object blends

Spells

-Create and AI using “The Password Trick”
-When the correct player accumulates the correct amount of the specified resourse activate a spell
-use “Object has Target” to fire

Weapons

-Name four pavilions “Empty”
-When a weapon is received, name one of the pavilions (weapon name)
-When a pavilion is selected the weapon is equipped

AI

There is not much to know about AI scripting. The CD comes with a very comprehensive guide to AI.

Mod Packs

Mod packs are altered with a program called Mod Pack Studios that can be found here

Hey that's some nice work there

Note: AoK Dragon is just a subdivision of DGDN (Dragon Gaming Design Network), and the forums you have linked us to are inactive.

Our new forums are at: http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~dgdn

Although DGDN's home address is in public domain, I'd rather not advertise it since it hasn't been given the official nod for the opening.

And Fusion Studios can also be accessed by www.fusion-studios.net

The Latin Design Team and Massacre Creations have incorrect URLs.

Ok, I will make these changes.

If you would like to write a tutorial on Mod Packs, AI, or even RMS it would be fine with me.

By the way, what is the new Massacre Creations site?

Nice post. Good to see a list of design teams, even if I've never heard of some of the ones without links.

Good basic guides for designing rookies too. Keep it up.

I find it interesting that my site is up there on that list.

...

I guess what was once a site to help RPG scenario designers now became a design team...hmm.

...

Oh well, I don't see a problem.

Wowowowow!!! GREAT WORK, spitfire_23!!!

A lot of those teams are very no-name, having turned inactive even before they released a single creation... I'd get rid of those, as they had very little contribution to the SD community.

Again - great job, just a bit too thorough.

Not bad, though i'd change a few things:

1- i'd divide the team sections in two: renowned teams (the big ones: snpunk, woad, tsunami, etc.) and other teams (the others and less-renowned ones).

2-

AI

There is not much to know about AI scripting. The CD comes with a very comprehensive guide to AI.

I'd also reccomend downloading the utility "Ai Editor" by stoyan ratchev in the market. It's great, i owe much of my AI scripting ability to it.
