Welcome to the AoEH Players and Reviewers Board III

History

The original review thread began, when back in October 2004, Richard Ames started the Board. When it ended around March 2006, IICDO rebuilt it in AoEH Players and Reviewers Board II in August 2006. Its purpose is to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We have discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions, the original board boasting that almost all recent submissions had at least one review, something we hope to attain. Although the original threads will no longer be updated anymore as Richard and IICDO have moved on, the remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. Here are the links for previous boards' campaign recognitions, review results and campaign of the months, etc...

Original AoEH Players and Reviewers Board
AoEH Players and Reviewers Board II

Overview

The reviewers’ board will remain somewhat the same as for submissions campaigns and scenarios. The Unofficial Reviewers Team is also back so sign up below.
This board is to ensure all designers get feedback on their work and know where they are at with their designing Also so all downloaders have a rough gauge of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.
Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it.
Read the review guidelines before posting reviews: you can find them here

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough gauge of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.
When reviewing older ones, review them to like as new at the time they where made. So go back and look at top rated campagins for that time, for areas like the scenario design.
People always need support and encouragement so we aim to ensure the reviewing process and intend to do our part to review everything submitted. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.
This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.
Again thanks go out to IICDO, who through his work gave the inspiration for this one.

Reviewer Warning

Although we do have a moderator(s) in charge of checking reviews but even they get behind at times with the new downloads system people can post reviews without vetting or sending them to Dr Lorenzo. Some have chosen to abuse this by treating the downloads as an alternate forum where they think the rules don't apply. Dr Lorenzo and team have always made a point of trying to have staff that can cover all areas, but they cannot moderate things 24/7. Here now is a standard reviews warnings form that is send out to those we catch.
They are as follows:

1.Your review of '[Insert name of file, or link to page, that was reviewed here]' is unsatisfactory for the following reason:
The review was badly written with frequent spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.
Please remember your review is public. It only takes a minute to spell check your work and avoid embarrassment.

2.Your review of '[Insert name of file, or link to page, that was reviewed here]' is unsatisfactory for the following reason:
The review was too short and lacked detail.
Reviews are supposed to give the author tips and suggestions on how they can improve their work, as well as giving a fair reflection to others of the quality of it. A review that does not inform is no use to anyone. Either supply more detail or convert your review into a comment.
You have 3 days to modify your reviews and comments so they comply with the Code of Conduct. Please read the Review Guidelines before writing reviews in future. Failure to comply will result in harsher penalties.

3.Your review of '[Insert name of file, or link to page, that was reviewed here]' is unsatisfactory for the following reason:
High score, with little or no explanation. If someone has impressed you that much with their work, simply giving it a 5 and saying, "this is great" may seem flattering but it does not help the author and is an insult to the time they spent on it. If their work has made such an impression on you then you should have plenty to say about what you liked, which parts you thought were so well done that you gave them such a high score, what could possibly have been improved and so on. Keep it constructive. If you cannot be more specific and helpful than you have been, convert the review to a comment.
If you continue with this type of "review" you will be considered to be trying to rig the score. This will not be tolerated. You have 3 days to modify your reviews and comments so they comply with the Code of Conduct. Please read the Review Guidelines before writing reviews in future. Failure to comply will result in harsher penalties.

4.Your review of '[Insert name of file, or link to page, that was reviewed here]' is unsatisfactory for the following reason:
Low score with little or no explanation. If the work really does deserve such a low score, then you should have plenty tto say about why it failed to impress you and how the author could have made it better. People cannot improve unless they are encouraged to and told where they went wrong, and this kind of lazy negativity is unacceptable.
Keep it constructive and, if you cannot be more specific and helpful than you have been, convert the review to a comment. Be aware that blatant negativity will not be tolerated even in a comment.

5.Your review of '[Insert name of file, or link to page, that was reviewed here]' is unsatisfactory for the following reason:
The review was attempting to rig the score.
Please remember scores are supposed to give a fair reflection to others of the quality of the work. There is nothing to be gained in artificially rigging the score to be high or low. This defeats the whole point of the review system and will ultimately get you banned.
You have 3 days to modify your reviews and comments so they comply with the Code of Conduct. Please read the Review Guidelines before writing reviews in future. If you continue to post reviews just to rig scores, you risk incurring harsher penalties.

6.Your review of '[Insert name of file, or link to page, that was reviewed here]' is unsatisfactory for the following reason:
The review was insulting the author.
Please remember reviews are supposed to HELP the author. You should say which things you found good about the work and also provide CONSTRUCTIVE criticism where necessary. Insulting the author is treated as flaming and, as on the forums, we have zero tolerance for such personal attacks.
You have 3 days to modify your reviews and comments so they comply with the Code of Conduct. Please read the Review Guidelines before writing reviews in future. If you continue acting in this way, you risk incurring harsher penalties.

OUTRIGHT BAN (CC to Seraph and FMT)
You have ignored your warnings and our request for you to change the way in which you review and comment. You are banned for a week. You may fill out an unban form which will go to the Forum Management Team. This also counts as an appeal if you feel you have been banned unfairly.
Until you have filled out an unban form and the FMT has decided to lift the ban you will be unable to post to the forums or downloads. Further infractions of the Code of Conduct will result in longer ban periods, eventually becoming permanent. I suggest you spend this time away from us to reflect on the consequences of your actions. Should you show no maturity in accepting responsibility for them, you give us no reason to allow you back.

The Top Reviewed Campaign/Scenario by Month

The Campaign of the Month is based on new reviews and not with new submissions. All un-reviewed campaigns and scenarios qualify. This will still follow up with a photo and a small description of the campaign/scenario. There will be a first place and a runner up nothing more is needed I would think. That is unless another campaign/scenario is so close we will give it a special mention. The amount of times these are downloaded and reviewed will warrant the placing. The ranking is also important and I would still suggest that you must achieve a 3.5 to be placed in this ranking. Selection is done on the 25th BTW, yes, I may copy texts from submitters or reviewers..

June 09

Our campaign of the month which received a 4.8 goes to a fictional campaign called
[im.??img] The Heavenly Escort by Phatfish
The Yakuzo Tribe is in desperate need of a new leader after the unexpected death of Zhe Yu, former ruler of Shengato. Wo Long, an old Saint, decides to call for help from a neighbouring tribe,
the Ikuzi, which is commanded by you, Tageshu, a noble young warrior. Will you be able to guide the Spirit of Zhe Yu safely to the Holy Temple, complete the holy ritual and become the new peaceful ruler of Shengato?

December

Our campaign of the month which received a 5.0 goes to a fictional campaign called
Bushido - Episode 1 by Nezon

Summed up Review by IICDO: A fictional story that grabs you right off. You are a young warrior sent upon a quest to rescue a friend and cleanse the land of your enemies. All objectives are quite clear and there were some neat tricks used with the original makers given credit for their use. The use of some injured units was great as you became leery of becoming overly aggressive, if you do you pay dearly. It flowed along quite well and proves to be a campaign you can play over and over with great enjoyment.

November

Our campaign of the month which received a 5.0 goes to a historical and part fictional campaign called
Little Big Nordic Adventure by Andrea Rosa

Summed up Review by IICDO: This ranks right up there with all of Andrea’s work. A must try for any Ages enthusiast. What can I say but Brilliant. You are drawn into the story and compelled to follow through to find what is going to happen. Careful planning went into this campaign as you could play all scenarios differently and come to the same ending. That is with regards to scenario three as you must follow the instructions to be victorious. Each map was beautifully worked out and simply flowed together to complete each scenario. I like a map that makes me feel like I could have been to that place sometime in history, or have seen that spot in a photograph. Brilliant work !

October

Our campaign of the month which received a 3.5 goes to a fictional campaign called
To Tame a Land by Bambi Slaughter/ RA_Brave

This is something that was made early on in 1999. Yet it hold some interesing play, though there are designer errors. You start out pretty well in the business of building up, but as you scout around you will definetly feel the presence of the natives. there are some early skirmishes but the the hordes start to arrive if you are not careful. Also you will notice the variety of units each player is unique but strong. Also some players a 'blessed with plenty of heroes' so be prepared for them. There is a little bit of help if you can find it, but for the most part you will need find time and resources to build up and conquer well prepared enemies. The second has nice tough trick puzzle with skirmishes everywhere.

September

Our campaign of the month which received a 4.7 goes to a historical campaign called
The March of Alexander - first 5 scenerios by prasanna

This campaign starts from River Granikos where Alexander first set foot on the Asian Minor. Every scenario has a playtime of at least one hour (maybe less if you are a good player) and most took me more than two hours. There is no scenario which you couldn't win and neither is there any that hasn't been a lot of fun. Great discriptions of what was going on behind the scenes. Along come some nice bitmaps and a very good instructions section.

I wonder why there are no "Song Of Fire And Ice" campaigns.

Maybe we should do a contest about that... I'd really like to play some of Tyrion's stuff or maybe Bran's magic story and of yourse Daenerys' army of freed slaves... 8-)

Anyway, I just put in another review...embarrassing again. Now I'm looking for some other and maybe older stuff.

edit: It seems I've found a nice campaign. Just completed the first scenario and it has been great! I'm looking forward to the rest, this might be campaign of the month.
edit2: I finished the campaign. It received a 4.4! Look out for "Four Seasons".

Well looks like we have had a lot of good reviews in the granary in the last couple of days. It's good to see the list growing as I regularly check.

Guys, is it worth making a separate topic where you can alert me, TDA or Lorry of bad reviews so we can deal with them?

About bad reviews... can a drop box system be added to the granary, so we see a bad review we just drop a note to you, don't think having it online is good to advertise.

How about some animals? Gazelle, elephant, alligator, eagle and lion should do it.

And, of course, the ultimate must be our lovely (but evil) cactus.

btw: I'm on a review of a campaign with 28 (!) scenarios... So far, I've completed 9 and "home runned" 2 which were too hard for me.

There is one thing we should discuss about, I guess. I am very unhappy with "Fall Of The Noobs" being campaign of the month twice in a row. I don't think that this campaign wouldn't deserve it. That's not the point. But I think we shouldn't be allowing any campaign to win this award more than one time. This way, new entries will always have hard times beause there will probably be some old campaign which is being re-reviewed and getting a very high score (because it IS great).

    Just my opinion, though.

edit: It seems you didn't list my review of "The March Of Alexander" in September. ;-)

I'd have to agree on that. The campaign/scenario of the month should be a 1 time only award. So that means we won't campaigns holding on to the position for more then one month.

Anyway looking at this again gave me an idea of having the campaign/scenario of the month as a news feature. Any objections, support or comments? Only thing that would mean is that we would need reviews every month.

Alright then lets make a date for say the 25th of each month we'll award the campaign/scenario of the month. Any reviews after the 25th of a month will count towards the next months CSotM (Cpn/Scn of the Month).

Right now though I have two requests. First a 200x200 pixel crop of part of The March of Alexander for the CSotM news post. Second I'd like someone too look at a campaign I started playing a long long time ago that I never finished but rather enjoyed. To Tame a Land. The design on it is a bit old and there isn't the eye-candies of modern day works but I though the way the enemies and maps were designed were nice.

    Cheers,
    Darky

Edit: Don't worry about the picture cropped screeny I've got one sorted out myself. I'll see what I can do about getting the news post up now.

Edit 2: I've started again on To Tame A Land from the beginning and I actually forgot how good the design was. Considering it was the authors only work and that it is from '99 it is quite good. I'll see if I get any more chances to play it in the future as what I played of it was rather fun and I recommend to everyone. Now to try and get those orange ships.

lol should that not be KBs? Will see if I can take a peek, does it have puzzles? Love the front page addition of best of the month, though I believe it was done previously. ALso will there be a news archive soon? I think Doc said he was going to do that?

I don't think campaign of the month was ever up although a while back when the granary had to be uploaded by Phill he would make a news post when Rich's reviews were uploaded. Hopefully this can be a monthly feature as long as we have a review above say 3.5 by 25th along with a 200x200 (at the most) pixel picture.

Also I've once again managed to beat the first scenario of To Tame A Land and this time without having to cheat at all.

    Best Campaign
In the opinion of this writer, this week's Best Campaign "The Myth of a Greek Legend" breaks new ground in AoE campaign design. In this 7 scenario work by The New Improved Olly Broicher-Azen, you follow the hero Perseus as he meets the challenges of a demi-god. Along the way you'll be treated to wonderfully designed terrain maps, an engaging story and recurring characters and places. RATED: 4.4

    Best Scenario
Return to the Gary Thomas' land of Alaia in "Lama of Hellgate". This one features a great intro bit map, excellent story and a massive rating of 4.6!- FULL DESCRIPTION

Look for new Picks of the Week on Sundays. Happy New Year!
