AOKH Survivor

How it works

You sign up. In each round, a challenge is set. You complete the challenge. The owner of the worst entry is eliminated. The last forummer to remain in the game is declared the Survivor.

The Rules

It is now too late to sign up, sorry. Every player has one "bye" - a free pass for one round of their choosing (not including the final round). You don't need to state when you are using your bye; if you do not submit an entry in time, your bye will be used.♦

If you enter a round but are eliminated, you then join the judging panel. If you fail to submit an entry and have used your bye, you are eliminated but you will not be eligible to join the judging panel.♥

In each round, the entries will be judged by the judging panel. The judging criteria will be made public within this thread, so you'll have a good idea of how to succeed.♣

The prize is a very impressive and shiny Custom Title, courtesy of Leif Ericson♠

THE FINAL

For the final, Major Helper and Watson will be racing against each other to submit the correct answers to a set of six puzzles. You may submit your answers either by email (closet.hippy(at)gmail(dot)com) or within the thread - but bear in mind, if you submit in the thread and get anything wrong, the other player may hijack your answers! You win when you get all six answers correct.

The puzzles vary in style and difficulty but you must get all of the answers correct in order to win and claim the prize of a Custom Title, courtesy of Leif Ericson. If you submit an incorrect answer, I will tell you which answer(s) you have got wrong and you may try again. There is no deadline; the round closes once one player gets all the answers correct - they are then declared the Survivor.

Puzzle One

The King is hosting a large party. So large, in fact, that he has 1000 bottles of wine to cater for his guests. However, some scallywag has poisoned one (and only one) bottle of the wine. Naturally, it would be disastrous to serve poisoned wine to the guests - and it is too late to replace it all because the party is tomorrow. Fortunately, the King has servants at his disposal; if a servant consumes even the slightest trace of the poison, he will die a few hours before the party - giving you time to remove the poisoned bottle before your guests arrive. Your servants are not indispensable, however; you must use as few servants as possible and yet be absolutely certain which bottle is the poisoned one. How many servants do you need and how do you find the poisoned bottle?

Your answer should include the number of servants and the method you would employ to find the dodgy bottle. Any method that works is acceptable (eg. use 1000 servants) but the most efficient answer (i.e. the fewest servants used) is preferable.

Puzzle Two

2: Harold
3: Edward
5: Harold
7: James

What's next? Why?

Your answer should be a number and a name. You should give the reason behind your logic. Google may help here.

Puzzle Three

This puzzle is in two parts: The first line can be decoded to give a clue towards the second part. The solution to the second puzzle is your answer.

(Part i): 843153996731471843134448413536368

(Part ii): Fclhcja'q ruk cilkqrepq.

Your answer should be easy to find once you have solved Part ii.

Puzzle Four

What has it got in its pocketses?

Puzzle Five

It came between Time and Money. What was it?

Clue: 39 years ago

Puzzle Six

William the Conqueror is BAGG. Who is BEJC?

The sex slave ones were kind of offensive. You guys suck for supporting them :/

Although I mildly included a similar argument, it was just pathetic to consider it the main appeal.

Mine was done half dazed on a four hour car ride so I don't care about how it turned out.

Also, no the ponies are not meant soley for children. The toys are, but there are a large number of jokes/references to appeal to older/Internet culture. Like Nyan rainbow dash (hidden in show), big Lebowski ponies, hidden background characters, quotes from other things.

You saying this shows you know nothing about the show so you should probably stop criticizing it. Even the marketing campaigns are often made for older audiences.

Secondly most forummers are not adults, and even if you are you shouldn't feel threatened or offset by something that is innocent, else you are not that mature at all.

You don't have to like it. But You have no good reason to hate it.

We were at harvard but only because they have the most amazing pool I've ever seen. We're not in college yet. It was just a meet (although the Harvard's mens team decided to show up and kick our ass at the meet). Harvard has an amazing swim team which I have no hope of joining. Applied to the school though...

I do distance freestyle (FML)

500 Fr: 4:54
1650 Fr: 17:07

off the top of my head and in short course yard times.

Thy is one of those "everything" swimmers. The only time I can remember off the top of my head is her 500 fr which is usually around 5:07, best at like 5:02 or something.

Proportionately she is better because she is weak female... I don't want to speak for her but I'm fairly certain neither of us intend to continue swimming in college.

our best 500free on our team would have to be our lead girl's swimmer 5:37 (i think)

I don't swim long stuff.
and we only have 4 mediocre guys (except in one specialty stroke - like breaststroke for me) the only problem is only one other one is good enough to actually take it seriously... and even then, only sometimes. I'm called a tryhard - but I'm trying to get better while their lazy asses cheat on the practice.

sorry, I ranted. any tips on freestyle? It's my second best stroke (like most other people) but it's not really on par with the rest of the league. just swim it, A LOT, and do what feels right, is what I've been getting from my coach.

That there is some nice low-quality coaching

Hmmm

1) reach your arms out far ahead for each stroke and turn your body on your side to get more reach
2) fingertips enter the water first. You want to get your hands and forearm at 90 degrees with the water for the most pull
3) don't forget to carry out the pull past your midsection. It's easy to just pull the arm out too early
4) try not to cross the middle of your body (like the line from the middle of your head to your crotch) with your arm strokes
5) kick

I do all that, I just find I can't rush myself (I get into that rut because with breaststroke, where you do have to have that slight wait period where you glide)

Secondly most forummers are not adults
Welcome to AoKH. This game came out in 1999. Which means those of us who were kids in those days (such as myself) are now about 18. So that makes us, y'know, legally adult. Most of the forummers here are about 15-22, and you've got to be over 13. Now I can understand why a children's show might be quite funny from time to time (I watch a variety of anime), but the inclusion of grown-up jokes in children's programs is generally something to entertain adults watching with their children. It helps encourage parents to spend time with their children while they watch tv, rather than just plonking them in front of the set and going off to play WoW or whatever stressed parents do.
I do find it strange that you indirectly accuse me of pony hating and immaturity simply for stating that it's a children's programme. The latter really is quite rich, when you think about it.

I'd argue that you don't consider yourself an adult until you're 20+ and that 18 is probably a little bit too high. I'd guess 17, not that it matters much. I'd also argue that AoK came out in 1999 but it didn't die out a year after release, so that date isn't quite as relevant as it would be for other games. Not to mention the Conquerors came out in 2000. Again, slight difference but I doubt the majority of forummers (who give a shit about ponies) are are adults.

I don't keep track of who is a pony hater so when faced at a comment like what you gave it wasn't hard to group you with them. Sorry if you aren't, but most of the annoyances stem from the people who seem to be compelled to hate everything pony. Recent evidence: CV puts pink at the bottom because Blondia has the same last two letters as Equestria. It's dumb. There is no way to justify that as a rational argument. It is immature.

What you stated was that it was a children's show, which implied that most people are too advanced to be watching it. This is false. It is a good show regardless of what you may think of it from a distance. Brightly animated colors and innocent themes shouldn't override the fact that it is a well written, well drawn, and high quality show. It is my favorite show at the moment and has the best fandom I've ever seen for television. Why anybody should take it upon themselves to try and throw dirt on something I like is just stupid.

Admittedly some of the pony-porn born out of MLP:FIM fandom is fairly... interesting, especially the humanized versions

I group MLP with anime, which pretty much means some love it, some hate it, some are meh about it. People are just more vehement about loving/hating it than what is the norm with human-acted shows

I'm back, so it's time for an update!

This thread has been quietly chugging along and then suddenly
1,000
It's great to see so much enthusiasm for this game!

Anyhow, the OP is in dire need of an update (with the Custom Title etc) but now we have more pressing matters to cover:

The Identities

There has been some discussion about which player matched up to each pseudonym, so now it's time you learned the truth:

Mr Blue (+35): CarolKarine
Mr White (+32): Watson
Mr Brown (+29): Major Helper
Mr Orange (+27): Mole
Mr Blond (+26): Guard of Osiris
Mr Green (+25): Vinyl
Mr Pink (+22): Jetkill Fastmurder

Jetkill Fastmurder, you have been vanquished. Welcome to the judging panel!

CarolKarine, congrats on being the most persuasive!

Vinyl's entry was my favourite, I was surprised it placed so low!

Round Seven
Fast Castle

We're all here for one reason; our shared passion of the game Age of Kings. It would, therefore, be wrong to not have a round based on this shared love.

Your task for round seven is to build a castle faster than anybody else. Naturally, there are rules...

Rules
You must start a random map (location is your choice - black forest, arabia whatever) with standard resources and one computer player.
You may pick your civilisation, but you may not play regicide, turbo random or any of the other settings; random map only.
You must not tweak a random map in the editor so as to give yourself extra resources or anything else cheaty.
Aegis and all other cheats are not allowed.
You may pause as much as you like.
Please record the game and email it to me at closet.hippy@gmail.com (I don't know if uploading to the blacksmith would be quick enough).
Once you have built a castle, you may quit/resign/go on to trounce the enemy; all that matters is the time by which you manage to build a castle.
Please do something which demonstrates that you are the player and you haven't downloaded a saved game from somewhere; if your player name matches your email name or forum name that'd do, or send a chat (I think chats are recorded) with your name or something in it so I'll see it during the replay.
Whoever builds a castle in the slowest time will be eliminated.

Anybody else who fancies entering this round just for the lulz is welcome to, although your entry will not count towards the contest and will have no effect on other entries; it's purely bragging rights. I'm saying this because there hasn't been a speed contest for ages and people might want to try.

If any of the competitors do not have a copy of the AoK game (eg. they are at college and don't have the disk with them) I will not force you to use your bye/bow out; a suitable alternative will be offered (expect an online game or something - I will try to match the difficulty of achieving a fast castle). Let me know via email or in-thread if I need to come up with an alternative round. If this is the case, there may be an extension to the deadline.

The deadline for entries is Midnight (forum time) 21st December 2011.
