Inspired by these two threads:

What do you think about a Re-make of Age of Empires 2?

AOE4: AOE1 Remake Ideas

What I'd like to do is launch a GROUP PROJECT for anyone on the forums to join. This will be a complete overhaul and remake of the first Age of Empires. Not only a remake, but an overhaul. What does that mean? Well that means we will go deeper into historical gaming than any game Ensemble has yet produced. We will update AOE1 to modern standards of gameplay as well. Each civ will be unique and fresh and most of all historically accurate.

[JPEG, (162.69 KB)]
[JPEG, (334.64 KB)]

What each project member will do is choose 3 civs from the list below to design as he or she sees fit, within the guidelines of the game as I will set up. What you will do then is research each civ to the best of your abilities, fill out the form I provide here and post it in this thread. Be careful not to be too verbose in your design because the forum seems to not like large posts. When everything is done and all civs have been profiled, I will gather everything together and make a giant new thread releasing the game design to the world.

This thread will be for strictly signing up for civilizations to profile (and then posting your results) and for discussing gameplay mechanics of the game and civs. What we want to do is stick to history and stay away from mythology and religion, except when dealing with Temples and Healers/Priests.

I fully expect this to last months, but that's not important. What's important is we all have fun making this and learn more about game design, history, and how they both fit together!

-------------------------
Okay, first, the uber LIST OF CIVILIZATIONS! Choose three from below you'd like to profile (first come first serve). *Note, please choose Vanilla civs first, then move on to the expacks (don't everyone try to gang up on the Greeks and Romans):

Vanilla: "Age of Antiquity: Dawn of Civilization"
- Assyrians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Babylonians :: Empror
- Egyptians :: Cassador_Chris
- Etruscans :: Brocktree101
- Hebrews :: Yamato Take
- Hittites :: Empror
- Kushites (Nubians) :: Empror
- Minoans :: Mythos_Ruler
- Mycenaeans :: egel
- Phoenicians :: GatoFedorento
- Scythians :: Dieneces
- Sumerians :: GatoFedorento

Chocolate: Expack1 "Empires Ascendant"
- Carthaginians :: Yamato Take
- Gauls :: egel + Brocktree
- Hellenes (Greeks) :: Dieneces
- Iberians :: GatoFedorento
- Macedonians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Numidians :: Yamato Take
- Persians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Romans:: egel
- Samnites :: Mythos_Ruler
- Seleucids :: Hosko
- Syracusans :: Empror
- Thracians :: Dieneces

Rocky Road or Strawberry: Expack2 "Empires Besieged"
- Axumites (Ethiopians) :: skystrider
- Britons :: Egel and Brocktree101
- Byzantines (Eastern Romans) :: Empror
- Dacians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Germanians :: Brocktree101
- Han (Chinese) :: MudokonGod
- Huns :: GatoFedorento
- Indians :: Lord Iarune
- Palmyrans :: GatoFedorento
- Parthians :: Empror
- Sarmatians :: egel
- Yamato (Japanese) :: Yamato Take

-------------------------
Next, choose your Civ Bonuses. Bonuses are things like, "Archers +25% HPs" or "Farming 33% more profitable." Please, stick to realistic bonuses for your civs. Make them historically accurate, and again, bonus points to those who come up with original ethnic names for your bonuses.

Bonus 1 - Economic/Civic
Bonus 2 - Military
Bonus 3 - Any

--------------------------
After that, choose the units your civ will field in battle. The research part will be this: Choose units that your civ used in REAL HISTORY. For instance, the Babylonians did *not* use a Quinquireme. However, you can give them a "bireme" class ship for gameplay purposes. The fun part will be finding the NAMES OF EACH UNIT according to the civ you are profiling. For instance, a Greek Infantry Spearman is a Hoplite (hop*lee*tay). Bonus points to those profilers who can give each unit a unique ethnic (non-anglosized) name.

Out of the 33 unit types listed here, I'd recommend your civs have no more than 30 and no less than 20:

Villager Citizen/Peasant (jack of all trades, builder and gatherer)
Villager Slave (a quick gatherer, does not build)
Villager Colonist (a quick builder, does not gather)
Villager Merchant (land trader)

Infantry Militia (every civ; very first military unit; starts as clubman in Stone Age)
Infantry Spearman
Infantry Swordsman
Ranged Slinger (very first ranged unit; starts in Tool Age)
Ranged Skirmisher
Ranged Bowman
Cavalry Scout (very first cavalry unit; can hunt; starts in Tool Age)
Cavalry Spearman
Cavalry Swordsman
Cavalry Skirmisher
Cavalry Archer

Healer Priest
Spy/Assassin/Diplomatic Unit

Siege Stone Thrower
Siege Bolt Thrower
Siege Tower
Siege Ram

Ship Fishing
Ship Trading
Ship Light -> Ship Medium
Ship Siege(rare "super" ship)

Unique Civilian Unit
Unique Military Unit 1
Unique Military Unit 2

Hero 1 (every civ has at least one hero)
Hero 2
Hero 3
Hero 4 (few civs have 4th hero)

*Note: Chariots and Elephants are usually reserved as Unique Units.
*Note: Make Unique Units truly UNIQUE, SPECIAL, and ELITE. For instance, a Hoplite isn't unique (he's just a spearman), but a SPARTIATE is an ELITE form of hoplite that would work well as a UU.

--------------------------
Next, profile the buildings for your civ. The fun part will be, again, to find out ethnic-specific names for each one. Also fun will be to come up with truly special Unique Buildings (listed at the end):

Town Center (upgradeable with different features, like in Battle for Middle Earth II)
Government Building (researches unique techs and "uber" post-Imperial techs, plus trains Unique civilian unit)
Market
House
Temple
Storehouse (gather wood, stone, and gold)
Mining Camp (generates gold like AOE3's Plantation)
Granary (gather food)
Farmland
Livestock Pen (like AOE3)
Outpost Tower
Palisade Wall
Palisade Gate
Stone Wall
Stone Wall Tower
Stone Wall Gate
Emissary (build at Mercenary camps to train mercenaries)
Smith (armory technologies)
Barracks (infantry)
Archery Range (ranged)
Stable (cavalry)
Siege Workshop (siege)
Naval Yard (ships)
Citadel (fort - build limit: 1)
Academy (trains Unique military units)

Wonder (give it a name and a unique bonus)

Unique Building Economic/Civic
Unique Building Military
Unique Building 3 (only a few civs have 3rd Unique Building)

------------------------
Lastly, choose the Unique Techs for your civ. You get one Unique Tech for each Unique Unit or Unique Building in your civ's profile. For instance, if you have 2 Unique Units and 1 Unique Building, then you get 3 Unique Techs.

Unique Tech 1
Unique Tech 2
...
Unique Tech 6 (Max number, based on max number of UUs and UBs)

-------------------

Don't worry about getting the "format" right. You don't have to do things IN THAT order. You can also easily copy/paste the lists provided above and work from there.

Alright, the floor is now open. Once someone completes his/her 3 civs, that person may then choose 3 more to complete! We have 30+ civs, so lets get going!

I had a lot of fun writing up the Dacians (did them in one 4 hour period, research included). They are one of the more 'civilized' of the 'barbarian' civilizations. I am liking them a lot. They should be a pretty good well-rounded civ with a few weaknesses and bonuses.

EDIT: I also tweaked the Macedonians.

The Dacians

Bonuses:
Bonus 1 - "Metallurgy Trade" - All player and allied military units +10% attack, +10% armor
Bonus 2 - "Murus Dacicus" All buildings +25% Siege Armor; Walls +10% HPs

Units:

Villager Citizen - Comati (Age 1)
* Means "commoner"
Villager Merchant - Tarabostes (Age 2)
* Means "aristocrat"

Infantry Militia - Clubman (Age 1) -> Axeman (Age 2) -> Comati Militia (Age 3)
Infantry Swordsman - Getae Swordsman (Age 3) - > Getaean Legionnairy (Age 4)

Ranged Skirmisher - Carpathian Skirmisher(Age 3) -> Carpathian Ranger (Age 4)
Ranged Bowman - Reflex Bowman (Age 3) -> Composite Bowman (Age 4)

Cavalry Scout - Pannonian Scout (Age 2)
Cavalry Swordsman - Auxillary (Age 3) -> Roxolanae Auxillary (Age 4)
Cavalry Skirmisher - Cavalry Skirmisher (Age 3) -> Bastarnae Cavalry (Age 4)

Healer Priestess - Estiana (Age 3)
Assassin - Ktistai (Age 3)
* Means "priest," but for gameplay they are spies and assassins

Siege Stone Thrower - Simple Onager (Age 4) -> Onager Romanus (Age 4)
Siege Ram - Covered Ram (Age 4)

Ship Fishing - Fisherman
Ship Trading - Merchant Sloop
Ship Light - War Barge (Age 3) -> Medium Ship - War Bireme (Age 4)

Unique Civilian Unit - Pileati (age 3)
* Land-Owners; All economic activity +15% Profitable within their LOS
Unique Military Unit 1 - Falxi (Age 4)
* Weilds a terrifying Scyth-like weapon called "Falx"; High Attack, +100% Bonus vs. infantry
Unique Military Unit 2 - Wolf Warrior (Age 3)
* War horsemen from Transylvania; Good for raiding (think: Tarkan)

Hero 1- Dromihetes (Age 3)
* First Great King of the Dacians; Wolf Warrior and Pileati -35% training time during his lifetime.
Hero 2 - Burebista (Age 3)
* Uniter of Dacia; TCs -20% construction time; Villager units, and Priests -15% Cost within his LOS
Hero 3 - Dicineus (Age 3)
* High Priest of Zalmoxis; Has healing ability, Gains small amount of gold from defeated enemy units
Hero 4 Decebalus (Age 4)
* Defender of Dacia; All units +20% Attack vs. Non-Dacian units within his LOS.

Buildings:
Wonder - Oppida of Sarmizegethusa
* Acts like a "Plenty Vault" from AOM.

Unique Building Economic/Civic - Shaft Mine (Age 3)
* Doubles the worth of any gold or silver mine within its LOS.

Unique Techs:
Unique Tech 1 - "Veneration of Zalmoxis" (Age 4)
* All Heroes and UUs +20% HPs
Unique Tech 2 - "Belagines Laws" (Age 4)
* The study of ethics, physics, science, and astronomy; All remaining technologies -35% Cost, receive 10 gold for each technology previously researched
Unique Tech 3 - Aqueducts
* Increases Citadel and Town Center siege armor +25% (helps population withstand a siege)

Advantages:
- 4 powerful heroes
- Powerful UU (Falxi)
- Very Strong Buildings
- Good Mining

Disadvantages
- Average Economy, except Mining
- Weak Ranged units
- Low selection of Siege (but the onager is powerful)

Great guys! Some good work there Yamato. Egel, can't wait to see what you have for the Romans.

*Note to everybody: Each class of unit has the same basic stats across all civs unless bonused in some way (like with a Unique Tech, Civ/Team Bonus, or Unique Building bonus). Keep that in mind.

Example:

An unupgraded Hebrew Herebh (Infantry Swordsman) has the same basic stats as an unupgraded Dacian Getae Swordsman (Infantry Swordsman). What makes the Dacian Getae Swordsman a better unit is the "Metallurgy Trade" Civ Bonus that gives all Dacian military units 10% higher attack. So if they both have a base hack attack of 10, then the Dacian civ bonus gives the Getae Swordsman an extra 1 hack attack.

Yamato Take, if u really want it (and i see you are enthusiastic about it) you may have the Hebrews.
(just change one of the soldiers to "Khoger" and the assassin\diplomat thing to "Sar" or "Sar Zava").

Anyway, write me down for Syracuse and Byzantium.

Thanks Empror. I was having a lot of trouble with the Assyrians. I'm sort of a Hebrew myself, I lived in Israel for four years. I'll do those name changes and I hope the Hebrews will be up in a little bit.

Just curious, but what converted you to Christianity then, assuming you were Jewish beforehand?

Sorry for the off topicness. :S

Alright, Empror, I'll add you for Syracuse and Byzantines. Why not try your hand at the Babylonians instead of the Hebrews then?

Sweet civ, Yamato. I like the fact that there is no "jack of all trades" Villager Peasant. Adds a different twist to econ management.

About your Unique Techs, looks like you either have to get rid of one, or come up with a Unique Building to compensate. The number of unique techs and unique buildings/units is the same. Although, I am thinking by the time we give these civs a final polish, that rule might change for balance purposes, we should stick to the rule for now.

Again, love what you did with the civ. The villager thing is a sweet idea.

Also: Everybody, Cavalry Scouts should be the first cavalry a civ gets, usually in Age 2.

Thanks Yamato. Don't lose that Unique Tech; we might add it back in later for balancing.

A suggestion for a Persian bonus:

"Cosmopolitan Civilization" +5% Population Cap (if the pop cap is set at 200, then their pop cap is 210, etc.)

The Persian Empire was the largest yet known, both in area, subject nations, and population.

Bonus 2 - Seige units +20% attack and health.

Units:

Ranged Bowman - Arcus (Age 3) -> Sagittarius (Age 4)

Cavalry Skirmisher - Eques (Age 3) -> Optio* Eques (Age 4)
* Means "chosen man" or special soldier
Cavalry Swordsman - Turmalis (Age 4)

Healer Priest - Flamen (Age 2)
Diplomatic Unit - Legatus (Age 3)

Siege Stone Thrower - Ballista (Age 3) -> Onager (Age 4)
Siege Bolt Thrower - Carro-ballista (Age 3) -> Scorpio (Age 4)
Siege Ram - Aries (Age 4)
Siege Tower - Turris Ambulatoria (Age 4)

Balance purposes.

But we can make sure that the Romans get the full economic tech tree, where other civs might not.

Here's my Hellenic civilization. Some translations might be a little off, and some ideas were "stolen" from the Macedonian civilization... (or is it vice-versa ). Feel free to suggest any changes.

Bonus 1: “Hoplomachia” – Heavy Infantry +20% hitpoints, melee and ranged armour increased by 10% each, but training time +20%.
Bonus 2: “Demos Kratos” – Villagers gather resources 15% faster, but their training time is +10%.
Bonus 3: Unique formation – “Epaminondas Phalanx” – A very unsymmetrical phalanx which has one extremely deep flank. Almost unstoppable against other infantry, especially opposing phalanxes. Age 4.

Villager Citizen- Polites (Age 1)
Villager Slave - Helootes (Age 2)
Villager Colonist - Automolos (Age 3)
Villager Merchant - Emporos (Age 3)

Infantry Militia - Clubman (Age 1) > Pelekophorai (Age 2) > Akrobolos (Age 3)
Infantry Spearman - Xystophoros (Age 2) > Hoplité (Age 3) > Phalangite (Age 4)
Infantry Swordsman – Makhairophoros (Age 2) > Ekdromos (Age 3) > Hammipoi Skiritai (Age 4)

Ranged Slinger - Sphendonętęs (Age 2) > Sphendonętęs Rhodos (Age 3)
Ranged Skirmisher - Gymnes (Age 3) > Pelte Akontistes (Age 4)
Ranged Bowman - Toxotai (Age 3) - Toxotai Kretikoi (Age 4)

Cavalry Scout - Kataskopoi (Age 1)
Cavalry Skirmisher - Hyppikontistes (Age 3)
Cavalry Swordsman – Hyppikon (Age 3)

Healer Priest – Epselos Hiereus (Age 2)
Spy/Assassin/Diplomatic Unit - Ektatos (Age 3)

Siege Stone Thrower - Oxybeles (Age 3)
Siege Bolt Thrower - Katapeltaphetčs (Age 3)

Ship Trading - Emporiko Naus (Age 2)
Ship Light - Pentakonter (Age 2) > Bireme (Age 3) > Trireme
Ship Siege – Naurakhosnaus (Age 4)

Unique Military Unit 1 – Spartiatai Homoioi (Age 4)
Statistically, they are the strongest heavy infantry in the game. They are, however expensive, somewhat slow and take relatively long to train.
Unique Military Unit 2 - Hieros Lochos (Age 4)
A spearman unit that is actually made up of two people with different hitpoints. Once one half of the unit dies, the other increases attack by 150% until his own death.

Heroes:
Hero 1 – Themistokles
Warship defence stats and hitpoints increased by 20% in his lifespan.
Hero 2 – Leonithas I
Can be used in a phalanx. Heavy infantry within his LOS attack increased by 20%. Spartiate Homooi increased by 30%.
Hero 3 – Perikles
Politai work rate increased by 15% during his lifetime.

That's really nice Dieneces! You exceeded my expectations! I like how you borrowed my idea for the Sacred Band from "Age of the Aegean." You tweaked it though and it works really well here. Of course, comments and suggestions follow!

Spatiate Homooi: Maybe change that to "Sparti Homoioi" - Makes the player wonder what the name means, until he quickly finds out: badass.

Skiritan Hammipoi: Love this guy. Great suggestion. Maybe find a way to sneak in the Ipikratean Hoplitai? Dont know where, though. Maybe the Ipikratai (hehe) can be added in a subsequent xpack!

Kataskopos: You should make mention that he is a foot scout (much like the fleet footed Greek messengers that cross-crossed the countryside) and not on a horse. Makes him a little more unique to mention that.

Leonithas: I think bonusing Sparti Homoioi attack +100% is a bit too much, don't you think? These guys would be unstoppable, especially with the other infantry bonuses given to them.

Diakobernesee Opiti: What is this? I must know! Alternative buildings for this same bonus could be the Theatron or Gymnasion. Just a few suggestions.

Again, overall, wonderful job on the Hellenes. You exceeded my expectations by making them very much unique from the Macedonians and Romans.

PS: I just started up a huge XL spreadsheet for this design. Keep it coming. Maybe I'll make a website when we're done.

Guys, u kinda screwed me over with your roman suggestions:
I was almost finished with Byzantines, went to sleep, woke up and - kerf*cken! I have all of my unit named up on the board.

Secondly, this is for YT:
Sorry to be such a bloodsucker, but I have some more changes I'd like you to install:
Ony = Oniya
Rabbi should be Cohen
And my mistake = Khoger should be militia unit

Byzantine civ coming right up...

I thought it was a sweet idea, and very appropriate for the unit.

Quote:

Well, I was considering making it "Spartiate", or even just "Homoioi" - either one, or what you suggested. They're all relatively good choices. Maybe we should have a poll or something once things get going.

Quote:

Skiritan Hammipoi: Love this guy. Great suggestion. Maybe find a way to sneak in the Ipikratean Hoplitai? Dont know where, though. Maybe the Ipikratai (hehe) can be added in a subsequent xpack!

I could make the highest "Infantry Militia" unit an Ipikratean hoplite. It kinda makes sense, since they were light and didn't need to spend as much time gearing up as earlier hoplitai.

Kataskopos: You should make mention that he is a foot scout (much like the fleet footed Greek messengers that cross-crossed the countryside) and not on a horse. Makes him a little more unique to mention that.

I'm trying to remember the classical Greek word for "herald", which I've considered using in place. I want these guys to look like little Hermes' running around reporting happenings to their kings... maybe without the winged boots

Quote:

Leonithas: I think bonusing Sparti Homoioi attack +100% is a bit too much, don't you think? These guys would be unstoppable, especially with the other infantry bonuses given to them.

Well, they were pretty unstoppable already, were they not? I'll make it 25% or something instead.

Quote:

Diakobernesee Opiti: What is this? I must know! Alternative buildings for this same bonus could be the Theatron or Gymnasion. Just a few suggestions.

This is going to be a let down... it's just a (probably wrong) modern Greek translation of "Government House". I like one of your suggestions better. I actually came up with the idea before I even realized there's a Government Building set for all, if not most civilizations.

Thanks! The Romans and Macedonians had fairly versatile armies, for one thing. Concentrating the Greek army on the phalanx makes them totally different to their contemporaries. The Greeks would probably be bad on wide maps and brilliant on maps with defensive choke points. A Greek player choosing "random map" would be betting more cash than anyone else.

edit: New Greek building is the Theatron. Gymnasium would have been cool, but I think there's already a little too much concentration in the Greek love of athletics (just look at their upgrades) rather than their love of the arts. We need a bit of Athens balancing out all the Sparta in the civ.

Byzantines
-By Empror

Bonuses:
I was going to fuse the greek-civs' bonuses with those of the Romans, but the greeks were too unrelated to each other and the Romans don't exist yet; so I came up with my own sh*t.
The Byzantine bonuses are civic and economically focused, since that was the true essence of their empire. However, they were also famous for their military mobility and versitility, and I spared that not.

  • Corpus Juris Civilis :: the primaral doctrine representing the strong sense of law and civil service that reigned the Byzantine society. All civilian units and priests cost 15% less, and have +25% health and +25% loyalty
  • Komnenian Army :: throughout many phases and restructurations, the Byzantine military remained flexible and fast-moving. +40% speed for infantry and archers, +40% speed for mixed formations.
  • Bursa :: thnx to her ideal location, Byzantium soon became a major trading station and a connecting port of east and west. -20% tribute tax.

    Units:
    Ahhh.... the Byzantine imperial units; what can be said of them? The Byzantines are terribly balanced, so balanced that they have no strong side. They have a sufficient amount of cavalry, barely any ranged units, and only late-game siege units. Their unique units, however, make them a horse and ship civ.

    Villager Citizen - Dipolite (age 1)
    Villager Colonist - Demolatis (age 2)
    Villager Merchant - Phortis (age 2)

    Infantry Militia – Clubman (age 1) |>> Maceman (age 2) |>> Ekpodemos (age 3)
    Infantry Spearman – Spearman (age 2) |>> Palatinae (age 3) |>> Scholae (age 4)
    Infantry Swordsman – Comitatnesis (age 3) |>> Skutatoi (age 4)

    Ranged Bowman – Toxotai (age 3) |>> Psiloi (age 4)

    Cavalry Scout – Hipposkopos (age 2)
    Cavalry Spearman – Hetairoi (age 3) |>> Lancaeroi (age 4)
    Cavalry Swordsman – Lminatei (age 3) |>> Clibanarii (age 4)
    Cavalry Archer – Sagitarii (age 4) |>> Equites Sagitarii (age 4)

    Healer Priest – Monachus (age 3)
    Spy/Assasin/Diplomatic – Rector (age 3)

    Siege Stone Thrower – Catapult (age 4)
    Siege Bolt Thrower – Balista (age 4)

    Ship Fishing – Haliebaris (age 1) |>> Haliargo (age 3)
    Ship Trading – Akapeleme (age 1)
    Ship Light-Medium – Liburna (age 3) |>> Dromon (age 4)

  • Unique Civillian – Auxilia (age 3)
    The Byzantine auxilia were a unique artificer and engineering corps. They can build (but not found construction sites) & repair. However, they are also fierece warriors. Auxilia are short-range skirmishers in battle.
  • Unique Military – Cataphracht (age 4)
    The crown jewel of Byzantine military, the expensive heavy cavalry Cataphracht are the strongest troops they have. The Cataphracht is an excellent heavy lancer, but can also make a quick togle to bow if needed.
  • Unique Ship – Fire Ship (age 4)
    A technological marvel of Byzantine naval warfare. Though requiring a close range, fire ships incinirate anything in their path, causing massive overtime damage.

  • Hero 1 – Constantine the Great
    Can 'empower' stuff like Pharoe in AoM. Rebuilder and ruler of Constantinople (the Byzantine capital), Constantine was a great mason and ruler. He made Chrsitianity the imperial religion of Rome.
  • Hero 2 – Justinian I
    All units in LOS immune to conversion. Justinian (despite being a hater) was the most succesful Byzantine emperor, and zealous chrsitian leader. He did much to improve civil law in his domain.
  • Hero 3 – Belisarius
    All units in LOS +10% to all stats. Belisarius was the most brilliant Byzantine general (one of the most brilliant ever). He served under emperor Justinian I.

    Buildings:
    The Byzantine unique buildings really save their ass. I mean, these buildings make this civ worth playing with! Their economy is superb thanx to the Guild, which eliminates the need for 2 seperate resource drop-off buildings, and the Battlement strengthens their defense.

    Town Center – Ekkentrople
    Government Building – Archaeum
    Market – Agora
    House – Anax
    Temple – Hagios
    Mining Camp – Ekanchuros
    Farmland – Agoraza
    Livestock Pen – Ekaren
    Outpost Tower – Phulakterion
    Palisade Wall – Mossun
    Palisade Gate – Mossun Korse
    Stone Wall – Techolith
    Stone Tower – Techolith Baris
    Stone Gate – Techolith Korse
    Emissary – Presbeia
    Smith – Chalkeum
    Barracks - Parembole
    Archery Range - Toxalogos
    Stables - Hippostasis
    Siege Workshop – Machiponos
    Naval Yard - Neosoikos
    Citadel - Akra
    Academy – Academia

    Wonder – Hagia Sofia
    Magos and Rector cost only 1 food and train instantly. Hagios (temple) cost 1 gold and build instantly.

    Unique Building Economic – Gomos (Guild)
    The superb Byzantine economy ensured that state-funded guilds oversee the accumilation of resources. Therefor, the need for storehouses and granaries is abolished for the easy-to-use Guild.

    Unique Building Military – Philura (Battlement)
    Like their Roman predecessors, the Byzantines knew that the secret for border defense is an effective and maintainable network of battlements. The Philurae are a lighter version of the Akra (citadel), are weaker but cheaper.

    Unique Building Civic – Xenion (Hospital)
    Byzantium was an ancient nexus of medicine, and later – the medicinal center of the western world. The Byzantines hospitals heal units in their range, and can be garrisoned with up to 4 units for fast healing.

    Unique Techs:
    The Byzantine unique techs mostly show up in the late ages, efficianizing their economy to it's peak. Their final upgrades greatly strengthen their ability to mass-up armies with speed, enabling them to construct an effective recruitment network with ease.

  • Crescent Moon (age 2)
    The Byzantines saw Artemis as their patron goddess, and devoted their flag to her and her power of the hunt. +33% food gather speed from hunting.

  • Solidagora (age 3)
    Their currency consuming europe and the near east alike, the Byzantines were the ones who set the prices. -15% market prices.

  • Quadrumvirate (age 3)
    The tetrarchy system changed the military structure, emphasizing a new importance of cavalry. +10% attack strength for cavalry.

  • Thematae (age 3)
    The theme idea reformed recruitment and training, enabling faster mobilization of the masses. -10% cost and build time for Barracks, Archery Range and Stables.

  • Greek Fire (age 4)
    Yep, it was them a'right. The Byzantines were the guys to get Greek fire and use it. This works like 'flaming arrows' for ships and siege units.

  • Foederati (age 4)
    The Byzantines integrated foreign troops into their own ranks, establishing a sense of unity. Allows the training of acquired mercenaries at the Academy.

    Advantages
    - Strong economy
    - Good defense
    - Great unique techs

    Disadvantages
    - Late ages civ
    - Poor archery
    - Requires external support
